SCANNY'S REOPENS

The Nelthorpe Arms, Bridge Street, Brigg (aka Scanlon's), has now reopened - under new management. A few new touches visible. Why not pop in for a look?

'Pop in for a look' - haven't they got any bevvies yet, Scribs.

The Nelthorpe Arms is obviously named after the Nelthorpe family and has, like SJN, the Nelthorpe Arms.

The original version of the arms depicts, The Bloody Hand of Ulster' - this is the red open fist.

This symbol is a contraversial in Ireland and, I notice locally the 'hand' has often been removed, or has changed colour.

The Red Hand is meant to relate to the chopping off of the left hand of an Irish rebel (although the hand in the arms is often the right hand) - the symbol was also used by groups, such as the Red Hand Group in the last 50 years.

As well as being a symbol in the Nelthorpe Arms.. the 'red hand' also appears in the coat of arms of the O'Neill's ----- by conicidence Roy O'Neil is the chairman of govs of SJN.
