BRIGG SHOULD BE CELEBRATING LINCOLNSHIRE DAY

We wish all Brigg Blog followers a very happy Lincolnshire Day. For our proud old county's national day is October 1.
It is a day to celebrate all that's best about Lincolnshire, including our wide range of  top-class produce and visitor attractions, many of which are historic.
We'll be fishing out our green and yellow Lincolnshire County Cricket Club tie emblazoned with imp symbols, and a few householders in Brigg can be relied upon to run the Lincolnshire flag up the pole (see picture above).
But Lincolnshire Day is celebrated far more in Lincolnshire County Council's area than it is in what's now North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.
We think that's a real shame.
When the top part of Lincolnshire was removed in local government re-organisation during 1974, Humberside County Council was set up to provide top tier services (such as education) in the north, until further changes in 1996 gave us the unitary North Lincolnshire authority.
Sport largely ignored the changes in 1974, and the Lincolnshire County Cricket League and Lincolnshire Football League both continued.
Brigg Town Cricket Club and Brigg Town Football Club both play in these competitions today.
Lincolnshire County Council still serves what's left of the old county and the border is much closer to Brigg than some might realise.
Go down to the end of Westrum Lane and you cross  into traditional Lincolnshire. The same applies when you get to Brigg Garden Centre, on Bigby High Road - in Bigby Parish, West Lindsey District, "old" Lincolnshire.
How about Lincolnshire sausages for tea night? Or a lunch-time sandwich made with Lincolnshire Poacher cheese?
