MARKET LANE UPDATE

The long-running saga relating to whether Market Lane, Brigg, is, or is not, a public right of way should be settled within the next month.
This was suggested by Town Mayor Coun Ben Nobbs when he gave fellow town councillors an update at the planning and environment committee’s latest meeting in the Angel Suite.
The issue went public after metal gates appeared at the top of the lane, where it meets the Market Place. That caused some concern within the town council and the end result was North Lincolnshire Council investigating evidence of Market Lane's history.
Coun Nobbs said almost 10 months had elapsed since the starting point. “However, I am sure that by the next meeting we will have a response,” he added.

This needs to be sorted out asap - seems some folks, rightly,or wrongly, are/have staked out their claim.

It could open a can of worms tho' -
if it indicates that Market Lane is a public right of way/highway, then Tesco has been slapped right in the middle of it.
It appears the route of Market Lane became ill-defined in the late 50's with the so-called slum demolition of the area.
This area was never really developed and the creation of the cattle market; the construction of the by-pass; general neglect all exacerbated the area's demise.
Then some of the land was sold on to Tesco - possibly forgetting that in amongst the rough expanse was an official roadway.

Bet they wouldn't build Lidl's in the middle of Barnard Ave.

Sadly, it's not really used for anything now, and I can't even think I've seen people nip through there like they do with the other courts and yards. But it would be sad to see it go, as I know some of my relatives used to live there.

The one connection Market Lane has that's worthy of note is to Jack Robinson Binns AKA Jack "CQD" Binns, whose mother and family lived there before moving to Peterborough.

Sova - I've used it.
Admittedly, it's no used for anything in special - it doesn't lead anywhere specific - apart from offering alternative access to/from the Market Place.....but, if it proves to be a public right of way, the new boys on he block can't claim it as part of their property and start erecting gates.

One of the amazing features about his debate is the Council's sodium lamp stuck to a side wall in Market Lane......if the Council (NLC) can't decide wot exactly Market Lane is, or isn't, why have they benn illuminating 'private' land at tax-payers' expanse for decades?
