NOSTALGIA MAN TALKS ABOUT TELEGRAPH

Picture and report from Phil Allen and Pat Parkinson

Brigg Amateur Social Historians' meeting on Tuesday, 2nd November at Brigg and District Servicemen’s Club saw Nigel Fisher talk on The History of The Scunthorpe Telegraph. Nigel told how he had begun his journalism career working for Steel News, followed by the Lincolnshire Times. In 1984 he found himself working at the Scunthorpe Telegraph as a sports writer. He described in some detail how he had seen the technology for producing a newspaper alter and improve over the years. He brought many old newspapers to pass around the audience and a later copy of the original first issue of the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph from 1937. The papers carried reports of major events such as the Aberfan disaster, the Nypro explosion at Flixborough, golfer Tony Jacklin winning the British Open and many others. Everyone enjoyed reading the “old” news, and reading the TV guides and adverts caused great amusement. The “special publications” were also very popular with the readers, including Nostalgia and Telegraph Trains. Having being made redundant as production editor, Nigel still works part-time for the Telegraph as a freelance writer.
The next BASH meeting will be a talk by Pete Batty on The History of the
Scunthorpe Area Fire Service (including Brigg) on 7th December at Brigg Servicemen's Club.

NF adds: The November issue of Nostalgia magazine is now on sale, costing 75p, and includes much of interest to Brigg area readers. It's always enjoyable to talk to groups about the history of the Scunthorpe Telegraph, Nostalgia magazine and the dear old Brigg-based Lincolnshire Times.
