BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF ELWES STREET, BRIGG

Take a butchers at this very fine picture of Elwes Street in Brigg which Ken Harrison took from a lofty perch in Bigby Street.
He says Elwes Street was previously known as The Butchery - a name reflecting its main activity. The slaughter-house effluent was emptied directly into the River Ancholme.
Previous to being The Butchery, it was also called The Shambles - an archaic expression for Butchers' slaughter-houses.
