Late on Monday morning - on our way to visit a few Brigg town centre businesses - we soon found a vacant space in Old Courts Road and went to the meter to get a ticket to qualify for the free parking concession.
All was fine with the meter but we noticed that the adjoining Help system, through which drivers are meant to report any problems, was carrying a sticker proclaiming OUT OF ORDER.
This was unfortunate but we couldn't help breaking into a smile over something designed to help being in need of help.
Secondly, does anyone agree with Brigg Blog about the layout of the keyboards on parking meters in general? Why can't the manufacturers give us a QWERTY keyboard? We now have a generation of young motorists brought up in the computer age. Mobile phones (eg the Blackberry) have QWERTY key-pads. And many "oldies" (present company included) went on touch-typing courses during the era of the typewriter many years ago. So millions of Brits use the QWERTY layout every day of their lives.
The arrangement of numbers and letters on car parking meters may seem logical, being in alphabetical order - reading down - but it's a far cry from the standard keyboard used in Britain during the 21st century.
