BRIGG CRICKET UMPIRE 90 NOT OUT

We were delighted to hear of a 90th birthday celebration held in Brigg at the weekend for Ray Atton - former well-known and much respected cricket umpire.
When Brigg Town played in club cricket's equivalent of the FA Cup, Ray used to go with us as our travelling umpire. We didn't often progress beyond the first round, but there were notable exceptions.
I can't remember exactly, but I think Ray went to Farsley with us in the early 1980s when we got to round three and played a team from the Bradford League. That's a bit like Brigg Town FC reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup and taking on Football League opposition. We didn't win but the gate receipts certainly covered our expenses for the day, including the umpires, scorers and the people who operated the scoreboard. The latter were kept very busy, our Yorkshire hosts making a huge score. However, Brigg nearly won. Rain reduced our innings to only 10 overs and that gave us a fighting chance. There was no Duckworth-Lewis method in those days to adjust the scores against wickets lost.
Brigg Town Cricket Club's first season was 1974 and we are hoping very much that some sort of 40th anniversary reunion will be held.
