ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY SUGGESTED IN BRIGG

A Brigg councillor called for an archaeological survey to be undertaken on a proposed development site near the town centre. And Coun Jackie Brock’s idea is being supported by Brigg Town Council.
Planning permission is being sought for the erection of eight town houses, two maisonettes, four flats and three shops on land to the rear of 5-6 Market Place.
North Lincolnshire Council, as the planning authority, will eventually decide whether to approve the scheme and whether a site survey is required.
But Brigg Town Council must be consulted about any planning proposals. And when this application came up for discussion at a meeting in the Angel Suite this week, Coun Jackie Brock suggested asking planners for an archaeological survey.
She said the site was near to the Market Place, where a market had been held as far back as the 13th century.
Coun Jane Kitching felt the design proposed to the rear of 5-6 Market Place was not right for the area, while Coun Mel Oades suggested a right of way should stand along Market Lane.
Town councillors on the Planning and Development Committee decided to object to the application, making reference to Market Lane access, “the fabric of the building” and the need for an archaeological survey, plus concerns about access to the proposed garages.
In addition to the so-called mixed use development of shops and houses, Conservation Area Consent is being sought for demolition of old buildings off Cary Lane, close to the electrical shop (on the extreme right of our picture).
Coun Kitching suggested they might be of some historical importance. But Coun Oades described them as an absolute eyesore and said he would be pleased to see them gone.
Various suggestions have been made about their use down the decades, including stables, workshops and store rooms.

Just a simple question folks - if Market Lane becomes a public footpath - proposed to be 6 ft wide....how can vehicles legally enter the Grimley-Smith car-park without illegally trespassing on a pedestrian right of way?

Some people only want to see what they want to see.
In amongst the 'eyesore' could be one of the oldest houses in Brigg.
The left-hand 'outbuilding', from evidence, is apparently No 1 Cary Lane - once described a detached cottage of some 3 storeys (probably 2 storeys + attic dormers)..and in the grounds of N0 7 Market Place - the latter a Listed building...and the oldest known house in Brigg...
It is peculiar how fortunes change and one building becomes Listed, while another becomes derelict and described as an 'eyesore'.
