BRIGG TOWN FC DRAW 1-1 AT SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC BUT LOSE ON PENALTIES

DOODSON SPORTS CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND, OCTOBER 14, 2014
MATCH REPORT BY BOB TAYLOR
The home team won the game with a penalty shoot-out after managing to get a saving equalising goal in added time at the end of ninety minutes.
Athletic started strongly with a long range shot from Bryan Hughes going over the bar. Brigg responded with a left wing break set up by Dan Kingsley  resulting in home goalkeeper Rory Skelton punching Danny Buttle’s cross clear
In the opening stages, Scarborough continued to threaten down their right wing with Ryan Williams prominent in getting well forward to support he strikers. When Brigg began to settle, a good inter-passing move ended with a header from Tim Taylor past the post. Then Conner Southern found the back of the net from another Danny Buttle cross but was adjudged to be off-side. Rob Zand was alert to hold on to a fierce shot after another right wing move. As half time approached, Conner Southern struck a stinging shot from thirty yards out but Rory Skelton saved well.
Brigg began the second half confidently and the ball was hurriedly cleared from the home goal area after a left wing attack. Dan Kingsley was causing problems with sharp forward runs and went close to opening the scoring with a low shot across the goal line. The first goal came after an hour of play when Dan Kingsley’s shot from the left wing was parried by Rory Skelton and JOE LIGHTOWLER  followed up to drive the ball into the back of the net from twelve yards out. The goal gave Brigg confidence to push further forward with space being exploited on the left wing when Elliot Broughton was introduced for the last twenty minutes. Anthony Bowsley saw a shot deflected past the upright and Elliot Broughton drove a left foot shot narrowly over the bar. As the game moved into the three minutes of added time, Scarborough won a throw-in close to the corner flag next to their own goal line and moved the ball quickly forward up the right wing. Rob Zand left his goal area in attempting to cover the cross but was stranded at the edge of his penalty area and NATHAN EVANS was left with a simple chip to find the roof of the net.
The game had to be decided on penalties and after Dan Buttle found the net with the first one, the next three attempts failed leaving the home team rather fortunate winners by three penalties to one in reply
