Brigg area Mini car enthusiasts and owners won’t want to miss Mini Day at Normanby Hall Country Park, near Scunthorpe, on Sunday, June 19, from 10am.W A Sass and Sons, Brigg – based at The Monument Works - had the franchise to sell Minis in our town for many years, the showroom in which they were displayed now being utilised by United Carpets.
In the late 1970s you could have your pick of the sporty 1275 GT, the Clubman, basic 1000 or less powerful 850.
I had a Mini 1000 (registered 1978) which you could fill up at Sass’s petrol pumps (where the car wash now operates) on two or three-star petrol. A tenner then went a very long way!
And the helpful attendant would do the task for you – long before self-service became the norm – while you waited in the kiosk to hand over your cash.

It that's the proper reg, the mini could be one of the orginals.
The first Mini came off the production line in 1959.
The first time a date letter was used was in 1962, although it was limited to the county of Middlesex. For example, the county added 'A' as a suffix.
On 1st January, 1963, other authorities (no such thing as the DVLA Swansea then) started the scheme and added suffix 'B' (63-64)
The registration date continued until ?1967 (?F) at which time it became the 1st August.
I had a Mini like that, Scribs...red one too.
We may criticise young drivers charging about with a car full of passengers...but on reflection I, as a young shaver, often had 5 or 6 in my Mini zooming for a night out, followed by a curry.....so perhaps we've all done something dodgy that we thought was ok at the time.
Nothing quite matches driving a Mini. Any memories of Mini skirts, Ken? By which I mean the body panels which were liable to rust, of course!
