FOOTBALL ROUND-UP: WELCOME WINS FOR BRIGG TOWN & BOTH BARNETBY SIDES

Brigg Town Football Club's flying start to the league season continued yesterday (Saturday, October 10). Despite facing a run of away games early in their programme, the Zebras have risen to the challenge and yesterday's visit to Armthorpe, near Doncaster, produced a 3-1 win.

Jack Boswell scored twice and James Osborne once before a decent-sized crowd of 161. Still unbeaten in the league, Brigg are now fourth in the table, but have games in hand on two of the teams above them.
Sponsored by a Brigg company, the EC Surfacing Ltd Scunthorpe & District Football League finally kicked off yesterday with league and cup fixtures.
Briggensians lost 4-1 when hosting Crowle Colts Development in the first round of the Tortank Barton Brotherhood Cup - Owen Dunderdale being on the mark for the Brigg-based side.
In Division Two, Barnetby United Reserves were 4-3 winners at New Holland Villa, the scorers being Ryan Thompson (2), Joe Stothard and Shaun Clark.
Barnetby's first teamers triumphed 3-1 at Market Rasen Town in the first round of the Lincolnshire Junior Cup. Goalscorers for the Railwaymen were Daniel Greaves, Josh Goodman and Cameron Hill. RAILWAYMEN OVERCOME CHAOTIC START TO PROGRESS

The 2020-21 season opened with a Lincs FA Junior County Cup tie away to Market Rasen Town of the East Lincs Combination.
Market Rasen Town, who for a long time were members of the Lincolnshire Football League, are in a rebuilding process and are in division 3 of the ELC but were not to be taken lightly.
A chaotic opening to the game saw Elliott Gunn pull a calf muscle, while in the same passage of play keeper Dale Coy didn’t see eye to eye with the referee over a ball in or out of play. Coy was sin binned and a limping Gunn put in goal as Barnetby had to face up to 10 minutes with only 10 men.
Within seconds, Rasen had rattled the United bar and Barnetby were well under the cosh.
They regrouped as Will Forrest dropped to centre half and had the chance to take the lead as Goodman went close.
Coy came back on and 17 year-old Liam Jordan, on debut, came on in midfield in place of the incapacitated Gunn. Liam is the son of former player Daz Jordan
Barnetby now took a foothold in the game but still couldn’t find the net; Greaves blazed over and Parker and Goodman contrived to waste a golden opportunity before finally Greaves broke the deadlock, slotting home Goodman’s centre on 36 minutes.
The goal settled the Railwaymen down and minutes Goodman cut in from the left and curled a beautiful right foot strike that struck the far upright and nestled in the net.
United led 2-0 at the break and started the second half much the brighter, creating countless chances but failing to secure the 3rd that would put the game to bed.
Finally, on 70 minutes, Greaves swung over a free kick which Cameron Hill met at the far post with a free header to notch his 138th goal for the Railwaymen.
Brackenbury and Wilson replaced Hartley and Goodman as Barnetby continued to press, with young Jordan in particular, in midfield, belying his years with a composed performance.
With 5 minutes remaining, Rasen worked the ball well down their left-hand side and Kortynickyj slotted home a goal that their efforts deserved.
