While emerging from the Nisa Local shop in Queen Street earlier tonight (Tuesday) I glanced up Station Road and spotted one of those First TransPennine Express trains progressing slowly through Brigg station. Brigg Blog has been trying to spy one of these driver training trains for the past week or to, but had enjoyed no success until tonight. We nipped straight down to the station with the trusty camera, but the unit hadn't stopped for a breather.
It was hardly the same as running up Station Approach (note the original name) in the mid-1960s to catch a glimpse of the famous Grimsby fish train passing through, with its unforgettable aroma. Steam, if we were lucky - the loco, not the fish! We think it came through between 6.15pm and 6.30pm but can't recall exactly.
But back to the present.... First TransPennine Express drivers are familiarising themselves with the Brigg line ahead of May 25 when a limited additional train service will run from Sheffield to Cleethorpes, while the landslide near Hatfield continues to rule out the Doncaster-Scunthorpe route, leading to what is officially called "bustitution". We thought that was something engaged in by a friendly sort of lady with a large chest.
