Parents and pupils of Class 1 at St Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy in Brigg are currently raising over £2,000 to provide a fine new climbing frame for the school playground.
Hearing about the project, company chiefs at Elsham Wold-based seed specialists GFP Agriculture stepped in with a challenge for Class 1: Grow us some impressive sunflowers and we’ll contribute to the climbing frame fund – and award a prize to the boy or girl who grows the tallest plant.
GFP’s Sally Thacker (pictured), who delivered seeds, compost and pots, to the excited class, said: “We were bowled over by the children’s enthusiasm. They really are up for the challenge.”
“The children are getting the plants started at home and caring for them for a few weeks before bringing them back to the school to be planted in the grounds so that everyone can monitor progress in the competition.”
“The standard sunflowers that we have supplied to the school grow to six to eight feet, so they should provide a brave show and an interesting competition.”
Class I’s teacher Bridget Forman and early years practitioner Teresa Evans say they are delighted that the firm has taken an interest in the school. This term the class are looking at growing and nurturing living things as a part of the curriculum, so the sunflower challenge is an ideal project.
Miss Forman added: “It is also great fun for the children. We are already getting early progress reports and things will get really interesting when the plants come back to the school, where size and growth rates can be measured and discussed.”
“It will also provide a wonderful splash of colour in the gardens of the foundation unit where the climbing frame will eventually be sited.”
