BRIGG FAMILY FUN TODAY

We hope wet weather does not spoil the 3Bs Family Activities Day today, Saturday, April 7, from 10am at Woodbine Park, off South View Avenue, Brigg (near the Recreation Ground).
The 3Bs project provides activities for youngsters and is overseen by Brigg Town Council. Expert leaders are on hand to co-ordinate various events for the young folk of the town and it's all a far cry from my teenage years when, as kids in the late 1960s and early 1970s, we organised our own football and cricket matches on a patch of grass just a few yards away from where today's family day is taking place. Games were played morning, noon and night every weekend and in the evenings (light permitting).
When it came to cricket, we had no pads (never mind helmets) but played with a hard ball, not those of the tennis variety. The area where we pitched our stumps was cut by Brigg Urban District Council a few times each summer - that was it. That taught us  to watch the ball very closely, when batting. I think we all came through the experience with front teeth intact. And quite a few of us went on to play club cricket locally for many years.
Happy memories!
