NEW-LOOK BRIGG RECREATION GROUND TO KICK-START INTEREST IN VARIOUS SPORTS

Following the first games of hockey played at newly revamped Brigg Recreation Ground over the weekend, Brigg Blog - and other sporting fans - are now looking forward to watching netball and tennis on the impressive courts  provided as part of North Lincolnshire Council's extensive redevelopment scheme.
The Rec has extensive car parking provision near the new changing room block, divided by the access road leading to Brigg Town FC's nearby Hawthorns ground and clubhouse.
A men's grass football pitch has been retained, together with the traditional cricket ground. They are both next to the tall row of poplar trees which forms the boundary on the Wrawby side.
The cricket field will be the subject of further improvements to the outfield and playing square later this year.
We hope it won't be too long before we are informed of Saturday and Sunday League football matches being played at the Rec so the players can make use of the new changing rooms with en suite showers.
We will also be interested to learn when the sizeable community room sees its first booking. It's certainly large enough to host a full-scale meeting, should the need arise, and small social gatherings.
When it comes to football, there's great potential to run leagues playing on an all-weather surface at The Rec, similar to one we recall at Ancholme Leisure Centre, Scawby Brook.
We really hope that the super new facilities provided by the council result in new teams being formed by various sports clubs in Brigg and district.
It's doubtful that we will recapture the football glory days of the 1980s when Brigg Amateurs FC had three Saturday teams using the Rec, and there were Sunday games (morning and afternoon) involving the likes of Brigg Servicemen, Black Bull, Dying Gladiator, Falcon Cycles and King Billy (Scawby Brook).
But now the council has invested heavily in the New Rec, the ball is firmly in the court of sportsmen and women in the Brigg area to make full use of these wonderful facilities.
Hockey matches will now take place regularly at the Rec over the coming months.

Further car parking has been provided near the courts and adjacent to the small grass football pitch, which has been retained for use by junior teams. This grassy area was once used as the main hockey pitch and borders Wrawby Road.
