RAINWORTH V BRIGG TOWN FC MATCH SUMMARY, OCTOBER 28

This was almost a repeat of the performance at Padiham the previous week with Brigg well in the game and actually leading up to the last seven minutes before surrendering this advantage and then folding to concede two more goals in the last three minutes.

The home team started with plenty of confidence and within the first minute a right wing cross was kicked off the goal line. Then after a free kick from thirty five yards out flew over Jody Barford’s cross bar, Tommy Hannigan struck another shot from a right wing cross just past the post. Continuing to attack the Brigg goal, Jamie Brown turned neatly inside the penalty area but was caught off-side. Despite this early onslaught, Brigg took the lead after seven minutes when ELLIOT BROUGHTON won possession on the right wing and ran at the home defenders before striking a shot into the corner of the net from twenty yards out. Brigg had a good chance to double the score when minutes later, Danny Buttle delivered a cross along the six yard line but the ball was cleared. Jody Barford pulled off a good diving save to maintain the lead but the Wrens were level on the half hour mark when the Brigg defenders failed to clear a harmless looking ball inside the penalty area and CRAIG MITCHELL struck a sweet shot into the back of the net.  The immediate response came from Joe Lightowler, who forced home ‘keeper Liam Roberts into a good save but Brigg were back in front seven minutes later when LAURENCE McKAY converted following a left wing corner kick. Jody Barford had to get down quickly,  smothering the ball on his goal line just before the break.

The Wrens started the second half as brightly as they had done in the first. Two attempts from the right wing went close to getting them back level but Brigg then began to look dangerous on counter attacks with Elliot Broughton being closely marked. The deciding moment in the game came half way through the second half when Leigh Hutchinson ran clear on the left into the penalty area and struck a shot which hit the inside of the far upright before bouncing back across the goal area into the arms of ‘keeper Liam Roberts.  Brigg continued to weather the increasing home attacks where height advantage of the home forwards was important.  Then with seven minutes remaining, a harmless looking bouncing ball into Jody Barford’s goal area saw the Brigg keeper only able to get a fingertip to the ball and it landed in the top of the net to level the score. The initiative swung completely to the home team and with three minutes remaining, they were awarded a free kick near the half way line, pumped into the Brigg goal area and met by ALEX FORD to put the Wrens ahead. Brigg’s misery was completed in added time when everyone surged forward for a left wing corner kick awarded to them, which was cleared out of the penalty area and booted up the pitch for substitute AARON RICHARDS to run free to score an easy fourth and humiliating goal.

BRIGG TRAIN TRAVEL INFORMATION

You may have noticed that railway timetables have appeared at various locations  across Brigg - this one being at the top of Station Road. 

The aim is to alert people to the existence of our Saturdays-only train service to Sheffield and Cleethorpes (three in each direction).

Brigg Town Council hopes to get the timetable seen here put into a protective case against the weather.

Note the British Rail emblem on the station sign (above) which is now more than a little nostalgic. Not as impressive as the original "prancing lion" logo painted on the side of steam locos, though. 

NEW BRIGG HOMES PLAN REJECTED

Planning permission to erect two dwellings on land adjacent to 5 Princes Street, Brigg, has been refused by North Lincolnshire Council.
Anyone refused permission has a right to appeal to the Government, in the hope of getting a local authority's decision overturned.

BRIGG TOWN CENTRE IMPROVEMENTS ON WAY

Work will be starting in the not too distant future on the wall near the White Hart pub, in Brigg town centre, and the riverside footpath/cycleway alongside the River Ancholme, eventually reaching South Ferriby.

DON'T MISS BRIGG WW1 EXHIBITION AT HERITAGE CENTRE

Make sure you pop into Brigg Heritage Centre and view the Lest We Forget World War One exhibition. The centre is within the Angel complex, in the town centre.

BRIGG YOUNGSTERS GET CHANCE TO TAKE OVER

North Lincolnshire Council is encouraging young people to join in Takeover Week 2014 (17 November to 21 November) where they can take over a range decisions and services.

North Lincolnshire’s Takeover Week is expanding on the national Takeover Day that takes place Friday 21 November. The day gives children and young people the chance to work with adults and be involved in decision-making.
The council has made this into a week-long event to give children and young people more opportunities to experience the world of work and make their voices heard, while adults and organisations will get a different perspective on what they do.
There are a number of shadowing opportunities for young people to get involved in and takeover. These include journalism and project development as well as learning about different services.
The opportunities for Takeover Week 2014 have been developed by listening to young peoples’ views, and building on what activities were successful last year.
They include:

• Being a young reporter for the day at Scunthorpe Telegraph helping to promote young people’s positive activities as well as develop a young person’s newspaper column
• Visiting Humberside Police Air Response Unit
• Shadowing Councillor Rob Waltham (Brigg & Wolds), cabinet member for People
• Taking over lessons in a primary school delivering learning about World War One
• Spending a day working with the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service
• Working and reading with young children to contribute to the development of the Imagination Library
• Working with older people to share skills

Young people who would like to express an interest in the opportunities need to complete the expression of interest form on the council’s website: www.northlincs.gov.uk/people-health-and-care/children-and-young-people/services-for-young-people/local-takeover-week/.

Coun Rob Waltham (Brigg and Wolds), North Lincolnshire Council's Cabinet Member for People Services, last night revealed to Brigg Town Council's meeting in the Angel Suite that schools in the town are to get extra funding from next April:

• St. Mary's £30,040
• Sir John Nelthorpe £128,940
• Vale Academy £150,390

Rob was sure the cash would be put to good use.

Brigg folk: Have your got an old electrical item that’s lost its spark?  Then be a bright spark don’t bin it, bring it to one of our Household Recycling Centres between 20 October and 19 December to have the chance to win one of five fantastic prizes. 

First prize is a Smart Television (approx value £600)
Second prize- Games Console (approx value £400)
Third prize – Camera (approx value £200)
Fourth prize – Ereader (approx value £100)
Fifth prize – Clock Radio (approx £40)

Simply bring along your broken and worn out electrical items such as fridges, TV’s, hairdryers, irons and kettles to the site and you will be given a prize draw ticket to complete to enter the draw. This is open to North Lincolnshire residents only.

Repic, the councils approved contractor for recycling and disposal of electrical waste, has provided the prizes to promote recycling.

So clear out all those old electrical items and get a chance to win brand new ones.

Competition Terms

1. One prize draw ticket will be issued per electrical item recycled at the Household Recycling Centres
2. Please alert a site operative prior to recycling your items(s).
3. The prize draw ticket will need to be completed with residents name, telephone number or email address and postcode and posted into the prize draw collection box on site.
4. The prize will be drawn on week commencing 29 December 2014.
5. Residents will be informed during week commencing 5 January 2014.
6. Prize winners may be required to participate in publicity.
