LIVE MUSIC COMING UP AT THE LORD NELSON IN BRIGG

There's live music to enjoy at the Lord Nelson, in Brigg Market Place, on Saturday, February 1 - courtesy of singer Dylan James. All welcome - pop in for the gig from 8pm.
Next week The Brigg Singers will be taking part in a joint concert, A Night of Celebration - Beyond Words, with the Stroke Association & Together Dementia at Redbourn Sports & Social Club, Cemetery Road, Scunthorpe, on Friday February 7 at 7pm. Tickets, costing £5, will be available on the door.
To find the steelworks club by car from Brigg, head along the A18 and turn right at the traffic lights before the Queensway Roundabout.

The next turning on the left then takes you into Cemetery Road, with the venue not far distant on the right. The entrance is clearly marked.

BRIGG TOWN COUNCIL AGREES TO 'FREEZE' COUNCIL TAX PRECEPT - AGAIN

Here's some new year good cheer... Brigg householders will not have to pay any increased charge to fund the Town Council for the 12 months from April 2020.
At its budget-setting session for the 2020/21 financial year, Brigg Town Council unanimously agreed to "freeze" its precept.
That's the amount it requires local households to pay towards its services.
A Band D property in Brigg will therefore continue to pay £69.24p a year to the Town Council, with slightly different amounts for other bands.
However, the vast majority of the overall council tax bill is made up money required by North Lincolnshire Council, Humberside Police and the Humberside Fire & Rescue Service.
These three organisations have yet to decide their charges for 2020/21.
North Lincolnshire Council - known as the precepting authority - sends out annual demands and collects the tax on before of all organisations which have the right to charge householders.
Brigg Town Council also 'froze' its precept for the current financial year (2019/20) which ends in early April. This decision was taken at a meeting held in late January 2019.

ROCKABILLY BACK IN BRIGG

Laura Belle will be singing hits from the 1960s through to the present day at Brigg & District Servicemen's Club, Coney Court, from 8pm tonight (Friday, January 31) in a fundraiser for the town's St Mary's School. Pay on the door - £5.
The Relentless group will be performing at Brigg Servicemen's on Saturday (February 1) from 8.30pm. They are being supported by the Hot Wheels Rockabilly Disco. Everyone's welcome to enjoy this gig - £2 entry fee payable on the door on the night.
Saturday night also sees James Curly - acoustic guitarist - performing at the Woolpack, Brigg Market Place, from 9pm. Free admission - all welcome.

BRIGG TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB & BRIGGENSIANS BOTH AT HOME

There's also football to watch at Brigg Recreation Ground on Saturday when fourth-placed Briggensians meet Epworth Town Colts Development in Division Two of the EC Surfacing Ltd Scunthorpe & District League (2pm).

NEW USE FOR BRIGG TOWN CENTRE BUILDING

It's good to see new use being made of a previously disused building in Brigg town centre.
Planning permission was granted by North Lincolnshire Council last year after it received an application to convert a former two-storey office building, 40 Bigby Street, into two flats.
It appears that the ground floor project - at least - has now been completed.

40 Bigby Street.
This building was used by a local accounting firm for many years and later housed MP Andrew Percy's Brigg office until it moved to another location in the town centre.
On the other side of Bigby Street, an agent is currently marketing a first floor flat to let within the distinctive three-storey property which has the Gents Barber Shop on the ground floor. View details here...

At the top of this post is a view showing both these properties on Bigby Street.
Potentially there are many more vacant 'above the shop' premises across the town centre that could provide living accommodation, following investment by their owners.

There's a flat to let in this three-storey building.

REOPENING DATE AHEAD FOR BRIGG TOILETS

A reopening date for a block of public toilets in Brigg which has been closed since September 2019 is expected to be announced in the near future.
The WCs on East Park, near the Tintab shelter, were closed on safety grounds after lead was stolen from the roof, allowing rain into the building.
North Lincolnshire Council had the roof replaced during December, since when the 'Out of Order' signs have remained.
Coun Penny Smith sought an update at the latest Brigg Town Council meeting.
Coun Carl Sherwood, a cabinet member at North Lincolnshire Council, replied that although there was no date as yet he would be meeting with an officer next week who would inform him when the toilet block was "fit for purpose."
These toilets are used not only by local people but also bus, van and lorry drivers visiting the town.

BRIGG PLANS CONSIDERED BY COMMITTEE

No objections have been raised by Brigg Town Council's Planning & Environment Committee to two applications relating to Albert Street.
They are to erect a replacement conservatory at 40 Albert Street and to prune six lombardy poplar trees behind Southfield House Care Home - submitted by different people.
Final decisions will now be made in each case by North Lincolnshire Council, the local planning authority.
North Lincs planners have now granted permission to erect a single-storey rear extension at 9 Kennedy Close, Brigg.

Meanwhile, Quinton And Kaines, off Enterprise Court, Ancholme Business Park, off Atherton Way, is seeking approval to create an access and two car parking spaces.
West Lindsey District Council is now considering an application to replace an already-approved five-bedroom property with two three-bedroom semi-detached properties on land adjacent to Roebuck, Brigg Road, North Kelsey.
West Lindsey planners are also considering an application for one dwelling with detached garage on land off North End Lane, South Kelsey.

BIG RISE IN BRIGG CRIME RECORDED

Crime in Brigg rose by 82 per cent in a month, latest figures show.
There were 61 reported crimes during December 2019 after only 35 had taken place in November.
Details for December have been released through police.co.uk as follows:

  • Anti-social behaviour 14
  • Bicycle theft 0
  • Burglary 1
  • Criminal damage and arson 7
  • Drugs 0
  • Other crime 1
  • Other theft 1
  • Possession of weapons 1
  • Public order 5
  • Robbery    0
  • Shoplifting 1
  • Theft from the person 0
  • Vehicle crime 2
  • Violence and sexual offences 28
There were 12 crimes in/near the town centre, nine in the Bridge Street area and six on the Springbank housing estate.
The police statistics cover a one-mile radius from the town centre, which takes in parts of neighbouring parishes Scawby and Broughton.
Nine of the 61 offences recorded during December 2019 happened on/near the Waters Edge housing estate which is just outside the Brigg boundary.
December 2018 - in comparison - saw a total of 44 Brigg crimes; during December 2017 there were 41; in December 2016 there were 38.
So last month's 61-crime total is well up on previous years.
However, it only represents an average of two crimes a day across the town.

JUST THE JOB - UPDATE ON NEW ALDI STORE COMING TO BRIGG

Discount retailer Aldi is looking for assistants to work at its new Brigg store to be located off Bridge Street. The going rate is from £9.20p to £10.41p per hour.
View further details and apply through this link...
Brigg Blog took these progress pictures at the weekend as contractors continue the groundwork, prior to the building taking shape and car parking being added.
Some interested local people are now asking about the creation of a new roundabout on the A18 outside the entrance/exit to the store and also about crossing points for pedestrians.
We'll be addressing this in a future Brigg Blog post.

North Lincolnshire Council granted planning permission for the store and (more recently) gave advertisement consent for various signs at and near the building.
Part of the store site was once used by Brigg Motor Springs, whose premises, near the bridge, were demolished early last year.

200-MILE ROUND TRIP TO VISIT BRIGG BY TRAIN AND EAT AT WETHERSPOON'S

There's already a follow up to Brigg Blog's recent post about a small party from Bolton in Lancashire coming to our town as weekend tourists earlier this month.
On Saturday (January 25) a man from Warrington in Cheshire used the Saturdays-only passenger train service to ride the iconic Brigg line and pay us a visit.
He had his tea at Wetherspoon's White Horse pub and restaurant and took various pictures, including some showing improvements to the lighting in the station area on land owned by North Lincolnshire Council.
The final Northern company Cleethorpes-Sheffield train is timed to leave Brigg at 7.48pm. But it only ran last Saturday because of some quick thinking by a long-serving railway employee, it has been suggested to Brigg Blog.
With the scheduled 144 Class 'railbus' unit unavailable because of signalling problems, a suggestion to substitute a 158 unit that was parked up in the sidings at Sheffield Midland was put forward and approved, we've been informed.
The 158 unit, No 158792, then ran through Brigg to the east coast resort and completed the return journey via Barnetby.
Well over 100 miles separate Warrington and Brigg so we hope our visitor, called Jamie, enjoyed his lengthy trip. The montage above features the 158 unit, photographed by him. And he also took the station images below.

Brigg's answer to Blackpool illuminations? It's good to have the station approach so well lit if you are a train passenger or meeting someone who is getting off Saturday's final train.

Brigg railway station bathed in light on Saturday evening.

And finally... evidence that Nottingham football fans have paid Brigg a visit comes from this sign that's fixed to a Bigby Street lamp standard. We photographed the notice at the weekend but the sign may well have been there for weeks or months. 'Forest On Tour' has included the British Rail logo, so did a group arrive by train, exit onto Station Road and then walk down Bigby Street? Perhaps they spotted the Dying Gladiator pub in the distance and popped in for a pint.

STUDENT WHO DESIGNED BRIGG HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL ATTENDS CEREMONY

Among people of all ages attending the solemn Holocaust Memorial Ceremony held in Brigg on Sunday (January 26) was Izzie Roberts, who designed the new memorial statue when she was a 14-year-old student at the town's Sir John Nelthorpe School.
Izzie, now 15  and pictured above, was among those who laid stones at the steel memorial which is sited on the Millennium Green, Elwes Street.
Each stone symbolically represents one million people who perished in the concentration/extermination camps.
Brigg Town Council organised Sunday's ceremony. Those attending included Town Mayor Coun Sharon Riggall, Deputy Town Mayor Coun Brian Parker, Brigg & Goole MP Andrew Percy, and students from Sir John Nelthorpe School and the Vale Academy.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO WETHERSPOON'S IN BRIGG

Customers of the White Horse pub and restaurant in Brigg town centre have very good reason to raise a glass today to mark the fifth anniversary of this Wrawby Street hostelry launching as a JD Wetherspoon outlet.
The firm invested heavily in refurbishing and extending the original 18th century hostelry over many months before opening the doors to customers for the first time on January 27, 2015.
Since then it has been the most used hostelry in town, with people coming from far and wide to enjoy its low-priced drinks, morning breakfasts and other meals from the menu well into the evening.
The decision to provide the impressive south-facing beer garden at the back, complete with tables and chairs, proved a masterstroke.
During the warmer months of the year, it's THE place to be in Brigg for many, many people.
If you're a bit hard of hearing like us, Wetherspoon's pub is not the place to go for a quiet chat with friends over a pint - unless you visit after 10pm. That's because the venue is so busy.
But that apart, the only drawback is the absence of on-site parking, particularly for people arriving by car in the evenings for meals.
Some of them use the town's main cark on Old Courts Road and walk down Wrawby Street to 'Spoons' but others seek out the limited spaces available on nearby streets closer to the pub, which means they are unavailable for other visitors to the town centre.
There's no doubt that Wetherspoon's has brought many people into Brigg who might not otherwise paid us a visit. And we know, from talking to many people, that some of them shop in Brigg before or after visiting the White Horse, while some of the pub's drinkers move on to other town centre watering holes.
Our overall conclusion is that the national pub chain's creation has been good for Brigg as town. If Wetherspoon's had not taken over the original White Horse, would it it still be going today?

NEW BRIGG EATERY 'SCORES ON THE DOORS'

North Lincolnshire Council continues to undertake routine food hygiene inspections of premises across its district, with one in Brigg and others in Barnetby and Scawby recently being visited and rated.
We are pleased to report that Pips Kitchen at Brigg Town Football Club's Hawthorns clubhouse gained the highest possible grading - "Five Stars - Very Good" - as did the Rathside Residential Care Home, on Gainsborough Lane, Scawby; and St Barnabas CE Primary School, St Barnabas Road, Barnetby.
Pips Kitchen at the EC Surfacing Ltd Stadium is a relatively new eatery - offering breakfasts, other meals and snacks at various times, including match days, at reasonable prices.
'Scores on the doors' food hygiene ratings for two other Brigg outlets are expected to be announced in the near future.

ENJOY A PADDLE IN BRIGG

Many people enjoy using the River Ancholme - Old and New stretches - in various ways at different times of the year.
Pleasure uses include cruising (Glanford Boat Club, Island Carr), rowing (Ancholme Club, Manley Gardens), canoeing and kayaking (Glanford & Scunthorpe Club, Ancholme Leisure Centre), pleasure and match angling (individuals and various groups) and even supervised swimming in suitable attire to keep out the cold (Lincsquad events on the New River Ancholme).
All these have featured in Brigg Blog posts over the years. But now we can add another to the list... paddle boarding.
While out for a cross-town stroll as far as Ancholme Leisure Centre and the Waters Edge housing estate on Saturday afternoon (January 25) we spotted this enthusiast.
He approached us from the direction of the leisure centre, passed under Cake Mills Bridge and went down towards the boat club before returning up river.
Despite it being winter, conditions seemed ideal with little or no breeze to hamper his progress.
So now we can confirm: rather than visiting Cleethorpes, Skegness or Mablethorpe you can enjoy a paddle right here... in Brigg!

BRIGG AND BARNETBY FOOTBALLERS ENJOY HAPPY AWAY DAY

Brigg Town Football Club, Briggensians and Barnetby United all enjoyed away wins yesterday (Saturday, January 25). So that adds up to a hat-trick of 'on the road's victories!
Town visited the Doncaster area to secure a 2-0 success at Rossington Main.
Ryan Thompson and Jake Reed were on the mark in the first half, and Brigg have now moved up to 13th place in ToolStation Northern Counties East Division One, which has 20 teams this season.
In the EC Surfacing Ltd Scunthorpe & District League, Briggensians beat Barnetby United Reserves 2-1 at the railway village's Silver Street ground. Ben Lingard scored twice for the Brigg-based team, with Jaroslav Judiny replying.
Briggensians are now fourth in the table, while Barnetby Reserves remain in second spot.
Barnetby's first teamers won 4-2 at Crosby Colts, in Scunthorpe, to regain the Division One leadership. See the match report below from Barnetby's Lee Fielden, who has kindly provided these action pictures.  Barnetby's colours and black and white.

RAILWAYMEN GAIN REVENGE FOR CUP DEFEAT

Ben Hunt and Brendan O’Callaghan both bagged braces as Barnetby gained revenge for their cup exit at Crosby hands on the same pitch 7 weeks ago.
They started the brighter and had chances attacking up the hill in the opening stages but were undone when a huge punt down field sailed over the Barnetby back line and allowed Ben Smith to nip in and loft the ball over the advancing Dobbs.
Crosby took control of the game now and hit the cross bar from a free kick and Wilson narrowly headed wide of his own goal.
Barnetby got on level terms on 35 minutes when great work from Andy Bradley kept the ball in play and fed O’Callaghan in the inside left channel, his low cross was turned in by Ben Hunt on his return to the starting line up from 6 yards out.
Again Crosby pressed but following a goal mouth scramble O’Callaghan squeezed the ball home for his 16th of the season and despite being under pressure for long periods Barnetby lead 2-1 at the break.
Within a minute of the restart it was 4-1 as first Hunt then O’Callaghan got their 2nd goals of the game as Barnetby raced out of the traps.
It could have been 5 when the upright denied Hunt what would have been a deserved hat trick and Forrest, Parker and Popple all saw efforts saved.
The game was far from finished and when Ryan Hughes slotted home coolly from the edge of the box a tense finish was in store.
Try as they might though Crosby could not find a way past Dobbs and the resilient Barnetby backline again and they held out for a deserved 3 points.

AMENDED HOURS SOUGHT FOR HIBALDSTOW PUB

Approval is being sought to amend the opening and licensing hours at a pub in the Brigg area.
Punch Partnerships (PTL) Limited, is seeking amendments for the Wheatsheaf, on Station Road, Hibaldstow, as follows:
OPENING HOURS: Monday to Thursday 09:00-00:30, Friday & Saturday 09:00-01:30, Sundays 09:00-00:00.
SALE OF ALCOHOL: Monday to Thursday 09:00-00:00, Friday & Saturday 09:00-01:00, Sundays 09:00-23:30.
Approval is also being sought "to permit accompanied children on the premises until 21:00hrs."
North Lincolnshire Council, as the local licensing authority, is now considering this application.

Council planning staff have yet to announce a decision on an application seeking advertisement consent to display various new boards and signs at the Wheatsheaf. The pub, in the centre of the village, offers food and music.

SECOND APPLICATION MADE FOR PLANNED CO-OP STORE IN BARNETBY

A second application relating to a planned new store for Barnetby has now been lodged with North Lincolnshire Council.
In early November the Lincolnshire Co-operative sought approval to build a convenience/food store on land off Victoria Road, not far from the railway underpass.
The Co-op has now been back to the council with a licensing application requesting permission to sell alcoholic drinks 'by retail' between 7am and 10pm, seven days a week.
The planning and premises licence applications are now being considered by the local authority; no decisions have yet been announced.
Planners received only one comment from the public about the planning application - the person in question supporting the proposed store and suggesting it's "just what Barnetby needs" by offering a wider choice of items than are currently available in the village.
The Co-op is looking to build 3,997 sq ft premises with shop, storage, staff facilities and ancillary parking.
If approved by the council, there will be sales space of 3,014 sq ft offering a range of groceries, alcohol and tobacco-based products.

The planning consultation period expired in December; any comments about the licensing application must be made in writing to the Licensing Department, North Lincolnshire Council, Church Square House, 30-40 High Street, Scunthorpe, by February 12.
A number of Co-op convenience stores have been built in North Lincolnshire in recent years - including one in Hibaldstow, pictured above.

BRIGG AREA DRIVERS TAKE NOTE OF WEEKEND ROAD CLOSURES

Drivers in the Brigg area should note two forthcoming road closures that will result in diversions.
The B1206 will be shut to vehicular traffic overnight at Elsham level crossing over successive weeks - Saturday, February 1 and Sunday, February 2 & then February 8 and 9, from 10pm to 8am.
This is to allow Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd to install barriers and pedestals.
The recommended diversionary route involves the B1204, B1206, A15 and A18 Melton Road, Wrawby.

POPULAR BRIGG FARMERS' MARKET ABOUT TO ENTER ITS THIRD DECADE

Brigg Farmers' Market starts a new year and a new decade this weekend.

I say, a new decade... for a VIP visitor to North Lincolnshire Council's bold venture when it launched early in the new millennium was actor John Savident, who for 12 years played butcher Fred Elliott in the TV 'soap' series.
This character had a habit of repeating his sentences. I say, repeating his sentences!
John's visit to Brigg helped to market the farmers' market to a wider audience.
Since then the monthly attraction has continued to thrive, winning a national award.
The latest - to be held on Saturday, January 25, 2020 - will be open from 9am until mid-afternoon.
Producers sell a wide range of food and drink to the public from stalls in the Market Place.
The availability of free all-day parking on Saturdays - a concession from North Lincolnshire Council - helps to attract people to the farmers' market and the adjoining Saturday general market.
The increased footfall then benefits local shops and businesses, with people visiting other outlets before or after touring the stalls.
Some stallholders have been supporting the farmers' market for many years.
Shoppers all have their favourites, but we find it hard to pass the Lincolnshire Poacher cheese stall without stopping to buy a pack to take home.

BRIGG PUBS ON THE BALL THIS WEEKEND

Brigg could see a fair number of blue-shirted visitors from London this Saturday (January 25). Some buses taking Chelsea football fans to Hull City are expected to make a refreshment stop in Brigg at lunch-time and early afternoon as the FA Cup tie at the KCOM Stadium does not kick off until 5.30pm.
Saturday night will see two free-to-attend live music gigs in Brigg.
Singer/guitarist Hollie Sharpin will be entertaining at the Black Bull from 8pm, with singer Simon Reeves performing at the Woolpack from 9pm.
The Britannia Inn is hosting a Burns Night supper on Saturday - in aid of forces' charities.
Tuck into haggis, neeps & tatties for a small charge from 7.30pm, and there will be a raffle. This event continues throughout the evening, proceeds going to Veterans Against Suicide UK and Soldiers Off The Street.

Brigg & District Servicemen's Club, on Coney Court, is hosting a children's party with disco on Sunday (January 26) from 1pm to 3pm. It costs £2 - pay on the door. There will also be face painting and a raffle. All are welcome to attend, the venue says.

PLAN TO PRUNE SIX TREES WITHIN BRIGG CONSERVATION AREA

A plan to prune half-a-dozen trees within the Brigg Conservation Area has been submitted to North Lincolnshire Council.
The local planning authority has received 'notice of intention' to carry out work on six lombardy poplar trees.
They are situated behind Southfield House Care Home, Albert Street - some distance from the frontage of the property.
The application form tells the council these are "over mature poplar trees along the rear boundary."
The intention is to reduce the overall height by up to 50 per cent and reshape the trees.
They are located near the edge of the Conservation Area which covers the town centre.
North Lincolnshire Council says this notice of intention is "not yet determined."
Brigg Town Council is being consulted as part of the process.
HIBALDSTOW: Planning permission is being sought to erect a two-storey side extension at 87 Redbourne Road.
WRAWBY: Approval is being requested to erect an extension to the front of the dwelling, including associated works, at Tor Na Coille, Little Lane.
SCAWBY: Permission is being sought to erect a replacement detached garage at 34 St Hybald's Grove.

BRIGG AREA FOOTBALL DERBY THIS WEEKEND

There's a Brigg area local derby coming up in the EC Surfacing Scunthorpe & District Football League this Saturday (January 25).
Briggensians will be visiting Barnetby United Reserves in Division Two.
This game at the Silver Street Ground kicks off at 2pm and will be refereed by Neil Birkitt.
Barnetby Reserves are second in the table, while Briggensians are fifth.
Hoping to regain the leadership in Division One, Barnetby United's first teamers visit Scunthorpe to take on Crosby Colts.
Saturday will see Brigg Town away to Rossington Main in ToolStation Northern Counties East Division One (3pm).
These sides are level on points, Rossington being 14th and Brigg 15th, although the Doncaster area team has played five fewer games than the Zebras.

The winner of the top community award in Brigg will be chosen early next week.

This will start earlier than usual at 6pm, and Public Question Time is listed on the agenda (see below).
Members of the public, as ever, are welcome to attend and listen to the discussions.
During Monday's meeting the council will be deciding how much money it needs for the next financial year beginning in April. Details of the budget for 2020/1 will be proposed for approval at the meeting.
Brigg Town Council will then tell the North Lincolnshire authority how much it requires and this will then form a small proportion of council tax bills sent out by the unitary body on behalf of itself and others to local households.

BRIGG STREET TO BE CLOSED OVER TWO DAYS DUE TO ROADWORKS

A road which connects with Brigg town centre will be closed for two days.
North Lincolnshire Council, the local highway authority, will be carrying out improvement work on drainage gullies.
This will mean the closure of Albert Street to through traffic on Monday and Tuesday, January 27 and 28.
Albert Street - connecting Bigby Street with the A1084 near the level crossing - is used by many drivers to avoid waiting in traffic at the Monument roundabout.
Between January 28 and 30, delays are likely on the A18 in Wrawby while Anglian Water is carrying out work on Melton Road. Temporary traffic controls will operate throughout.
