Brigg’s Angel Suite ballroom - managed by our Town Council - is the Friday venue for the Early Starters’ Baby and Toddler Group Breakfast Club.
New times - 9.15am to 11am – will apply from May 6.
Fun and exciting play sessions are provided – talk, tea and toast for the whole family, as well as snacks for the little ones.

NO LIKEY, NO LIGHTY (CONTINUED)

We know the powers-that-be follow Brigg Blog and that, from time to time, things we point out get flagged for action within North Lincolnshire Council.
So here goes...again.
The lights are out on one side of the pelican crossing, close to The Vines and Horse Fair Paddock. They've been out some time, but fortunately everything is OK with the pair on the other side of the A18.
Many, many council staff drive along this stretch of road (from Hewson House), Monday to Friday.
But we said the same about the lights outside the Dying Gladiator, in Bigby Street, only a few weeks ago (passed by officers visiting North Lincolnshire Council's Angel offices). And we believe it was our posting that kick-started some action.
We aren't looking for any reward or looking to score points at the expense of the council. Brigg Blog is happy to keep pointing out these things. But perhaps a round-robin email within North Lincolnshire Council might stress the value of the hundreds of pairs of eyes and ears belonging to staff members and politely request that anyone observing things amiss (eg lights) should feel a duty to let the right people know. Not pass by on the other side.
How about more of us try to play the role of The Good Samaritan and give the council a helping hand?

YOUNG ONES STILL IN THE SHADOWS

Sorry if some Brigg Blog followers think we've been a bit harsh with comments on cyclists, particularly The Young Ones.
Earlier today I observed, in my car's rear-view mirror, a teenaged two-wheel devote come down the A18 (Barnard Avenue) on the road, not the path.
Great to see, I thought.
Sadly, he then ignored the red light, took a left turn and sped off down Wesley Road.
Another example: Mum and young daughter together, both on cycles, using a minor road in Brigg. Hearing a car approaching behind them they slowed down, slowed down even more, then veered into the kerb (no hand signals observed). After the vehicle had gone by, they executed a right turn.
In the far off days when Brigg police oversaw Cycling Proficiency in the Glebe Road School playground, using circular tins of dubbin to mark out an imaginary road, more time was expended on learning to turn right correctly than any one. And quite rightly so.
How is such valuable knowledge imparted today?

THEY THINK IT'S ALL OVER

Dawn and Phil Clipson at the Britannia, in Wrawby Street, Brigg, had a sign outside last night saying they were declaring the inside of their premises a Royal Wedding-free zone today!
Leaving aside whether you think the monarchy is a good or bad institution, the weeks and weeks of press coverage leading up to the event has often proved repetitive and predictable.
It may be all over in terms of the ceremony and as far as Brigg's celebrations are concerned, but we won't have heard the last of it from many media outlets.
I won't be dashing to Martin's, in Brigg, for the Sunday papers this week. And I won't be the only one to feel that way! We know what will be filling the supplements and news pages.
A walk through Brigg town centre this morning resulted in fewer shops open than expected. But it is a public holiday, after all.
In terms of our Big Three retailers, Tesco had strung patriotic bunting near the tills, while Wilkinson's and Lidl were also open.
A good time was had by all at the Black Bull, where Royal Wedding celebrations were being led by mine hosts Amber and Rick. And a few other business people on, and near, Wrawby Street were trying to earn a crust (literally in some cases!) on a day when judging visitor numbers was always going to prove difficult.

Some tickets are still available for "I'll Be Seeing You..." - Brigg Amateur Social Historians' 1940s night to celebrate V.E. Day - next Friday evening, May 6, at Brigg Servicemen's Club.
It features Paula Baldwin's Shiny Stockings Swing Band and singers Sara
Blair-Manning, Christine Scott and Tony Orme, plus the Jump Jive Alive dancers.
Those attending are welcome to go along in 1940s dress/uniform, if they wish.

EXTENSION CONCERNS

Brigg Town Council is to raise concerns about single storey front and rear extension proposals at 38 Birch Avenue.
A comment will be sent to North Lincolnshire Council planners, who will make a final decision.
The town council's Planning and Environment Committee - meeting last night in the Angel Suite - had no issues with the following proposals now going through the unitary authority's planning process:
Redcombe Lane Carers' Support Centre: Minor amendment to previous permission granted, to lower the roof line.
St Helen's Lodge, Wrawby Road: Increase height of existing front boundary wall with fence, panelling and brick pillars.
12C Mill Lane: Erect single storey extensions.

SEEING THE WOOD FOR THE TREES

It could be that restoration of The Cedars, on Bigby Road, Brigg, eventually interests those who decide Brigg Town Council's civic building of the year award for 2011.
The large detached property, close to The Monument, has been very tastefully refurbished and is now in use as offices.
It's much easier to see The Cedars, too, as trees infront of it have been removed in the past few weeks.
This work was carried out after the necessary consultations with North Lincolnshire Council - the planning authority - which raised no objections. It is understood roots were interfering with nearby brickwork.
The large property has enjoyed a number of uses, including being Doctor Foxton's surgery for many years. Later, it housed the family planning clinic.

CYCLISTS BELONG ON THE ROAD - DISCUSS!

Having been brought up in an era long ago when police would take action against kids seen riding bikes on Brigg footpaths, it makes me uneasy to see precious little being done about the issue today. There seem to be more and more kids riding on our paths.
Surely bikes belong on the road – paths are for people. That’s unless there are officially marked cycle lanes, as is the case along Wrawby Road.
Twice within the space of a few hours I encountered several youths riding side-by-side along a footpath in Brigg. And these were not small children.
You also see quite a few cyclists (often adults) riding through Brigg's pedestrian area.
Brigg kids used to be taught Cycling Proficiency and told that, in accordance with the Highway Code, their place was on the road - never the path.

BRIGG TOWN COUNCIL MEETS TOMORROW

Just a reminder...Brigg Town Council's monthly meeting is tomorrow (Wednesday) in the Angel Suite, starting at 7.30pm. As always, 15 minutes will be set aside for Public Question Time at the start of proceedings for those residents wishing to go along and raise topics of interest or concern.

'BEATING' THE BOX JUNCTION

We've seen the new yellow box area at Brigg’s main traffic lights is being avoided in a rather ingenious way.
You must not enter the yellow box area unless your exit is clear, meaning drivers should never bring their vehicles to a stop inside the shaded area.
To get round the problem posed by traffic being backed up right along Barnard Avenue – either side of the lights but not in the yellow area - I observed a motorist literally thinking outside the box.
Looking to emerge from Wesley Road and turn right towards Tesco, he could not do so because there was no gap in the queue of traffic along Barnard Avenue (it was nose-to-tail all the way back to the Barnard Court offices alongside the lights).
So to avoid having to stop in the yellow area he drove straight across the junction from Wesley Road until clear of the yellow shaded area (on the far right of the picture above).
Having reached the beginning of Old Courts Road he then turned sharp right, doing almost a U-turn and drew to a halt just short of Barnard Avenue, waiting for the traffic to start moving again in the direction of Cary Lane.
Clearly whoever designed the yellow shaded area didn’t think anyone would try that - or they'd have extended the box junction further back into Old Courts Road.
His tricky manoeuvre was made possible by the fact that traffic looking to emerge from Old Courts Road is halted some yards short of Barnard Avenue by the red light.
We aren't suggesting for one minute that other motorists should try this dodge. And we've only seen it happen once.

TRAFFIC JAMS: DO YOU TAKE OUR POINT?

Anyone remember when policemen (and women) stood on point duty, to keep the traffic moving when local snarl-ups were experienced?
The scores of us who sit in cars, vans and lorries on the almost-gridlocked A18 in Brigg, particularly on Thursdays (yesterday was bad), might have reason to ask whether a PCSO/PC might be deployed to direct traffic at local level.
The worst area is definitely around The Monument, where unwary or unthinking, drivers block the exits to Bigby Road and Bigby Street.
They wouldn’t if someone was standing there in uniform, taking charge of the localised difficulty.
Compared to today there were very few cars on our roads in the 1960s and 1970s but police/traffic wardens turned out on point duty.
Anyone know whether the new breed of traffic enforcement officers is permitted to direct traffic? If so, North Lincolnshire Council only needs to send a member of staff out to walk a few yards from its Hewson House office block to see whether near-gridlock is being experienced and an enforcement officer or two is called for.

BRIGG VISITORS WELCOME AT RASEN RACES

How about a day at the races for Brigg folk wanting a day with a difference on Easter Monday?
The British jump racing year traditionally ends at Market Rasen Racecourse in April. This year - with Easter falling so late - the Lincolnshire track makes an early start to the new 2011/12 National Hunt season instead.
The racecourse hosts a fixture on Easter Monday, with a big focus on families. There will be a variety of entertainments for families, including the Easter bunny giving away chocolate eggs, an Easter egg hunt and a petting zoo.
The first race of seven is at 2.05pm, with adult admission from £10. Accompanied children under 18 are admitted free of charge.
Admission: Premier Members £28; County Enclosure £21; Tattersalls £16; Family Enclosure £10; Picnic Car Park £5 per car + Family Enclosure admission per adult. COFFEE WITH CARE

Brigg’s Riverside Mews Care Home, close to the County Bridge, is the venue for a coffee afternoon on Saturday (April 23), from 2pm-4pm.

HOT CROSS BUNS AT CHURCH HALL

Brigg’s St John’s Church Hall, in Bigby Street, will be offering stalls, hot cross buns, tea, coffee and juice tomorrow, Good Friday, from 11am to 2pm. The cost is just £1 and the event is being run in conjunction with The Brigg Witness Walk.

ANYONE (JUNIOR) FOR TENNIS?

Brigg Junior Tennis Club’s first sessions of the new season will be on Wednesday, April 27 at the Sir John Nelthorpe Lower School, off Wrawby Road, Brigg (6pm-8pm). Qualified coaches will be on hand, as the club seeks new members from school years 4 to 11. There will be 12 Wednesday evening sessions, starting next week. THEY ARE LEAFING IT WELL ALONE

Some weeks ago we commented on this section of tree which had fallen into the Old River Ancholme, close to the County Bridge and the White Hart’s beer garden. Clearly no-one in authority regards it as a hazard to boaters or rowers. Or is it housing ducks’ or birds’ nests, perhaps. In the old days we might have made a trunk call (groan!) to tip off what used to be Anglian Water about the issue. But we’ll rely on the far-reaching powers of the internet to remind the Environment Agency.

BRIGG COUNCILLORS IN FOR BUSY NIGHT

Three meetings involving Brigg Town councillors will be held in succession next Wednesday (April 27) in the Angel Suite. All are open to members of the public wishing to attend.
At 6.30pm there will be a meeting of the Property and Services Committee, during which reports will be received on the Atherton Way/Redcombe Lane and Grammar School Road allotments (pictured above) and an update given on the Angel Suite function room and bookings (pictured below).
This will be followed at 6.45pm by a meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee, when latest Brigg planning applications will be considered, including one for 10 new semi-detached homes on land off Engine Street.
The night's final meeting will be Brigg Town Council's formal and monthly "full council" get-together, starting at 7.30pm. At the beginning of the council meeting, as always, 15 minutes will be set aside for Public Question Time, if any residents wish to go along and raise topics of interest or concern.
Brigg will be going to the polls on Thursday, May 5 to elect a new Town Council.

BRIGG REPLACEMENT HOME PLAN WITHDRAWN

Planning permission to erect a replacement dwelling at Nicol Lodge, 3 Nicolgate Lane, off Wrawby Road, Brigg, has been withdrawn by the applicant before consideration by North Lincolnshire Council.
Meanwhile, planning permission to change the use of ground floor shop to an office at 11-13 College Yard, Brigg, is being sought.

BRIGG SUMMER FEST IN JUNE

Brigg District Lions have announced details about their Summer Fest.
It will be held in the Market Place and Wrawby Street, Brigg, on Sunday, June 12.
There will be craft and charity stalls in the streets, the Angel Suite and the Angel Courtyard, plus food stalls.
Lions’ spokesman Mike Johnson (pictured) said: “We have chosen a Sunday because it would not be possible for us to have the market element on the Saturday as it would clash with the existing one.
“By holding the event on the Sunday, it is thought we will not inconvenience traders who do not normally open on that day.
“We hope that the event will help to celebrate Brigg and we hope to encourage participation from local organisations. Perhaps, restaurants and pubs could devise special menus to celebrate the town and its heritage.
“We have engaged the services of children’s entertainer, Nutty Norman. Brigg Town Council has generously supported the event by providing a stage and sound system. James Truepenny, Ian Cawsey and their band will perform, as will Ancholme Jazz Band and a folk duo. We also have a youth band and other entertainment is planned.
“So far as Brigg Lions are concerned, this is not a fund-raising event, but an attempt to show off what Brigg has to offer.”
