CCTV cameras CAN be used to identify the number plates of vehicles being driven into the pedestrian area in Brigg town centre.
This welcome development in a long-running saga was revealed during Brigg Town Council's latest monthly meeting in the Angel Suite.
Coun Mike Campion raised the frequently discussed topic during Police Matters, although no representative of the Humberside force was present.
He said a resident had asked him whether it was possible for CCTV cameras to view vehicle number plates, as motorists were entering the pedestrian zone illegally.
Coun Rob Waltham, who is the leader of North Lincolnshire Council as well as being a town councillor, said CCTV cameras can be used to identify number plates but it would be most helpful if a "time frame" could be given, to assist those tracing the footage.
He mentioned a recent instance when CCTV had been used to identify a vehicle within the pedestrian area.
Coun Ann Eardley called for action against errant cyclists, saying a dozen youths had been seen riding through the town centre "on one wheel."
That incident that had been drawn to the police's attention, and she felt it would be helpful if PCSOs kept an eye on this issue.
Brigg Blog has highlighted abuses of the pedestrian area's No Entry restrictions many times in recent years.
Now we know that CCTV cameras can be used to identify number plates, hopefully word will get round and drivers who ignore the rules will think twice before doing so again.
Cyclists are required to dismount within the pedestrian zone but this instruction is ignored by many who continue to ride town Wrawby Street and through the Market Place.
If the police comply with Coun Eardley's suggestion, perhaps the town centre will see fewer incidents.
