NEW BRIGG MEMORIAL TO BE FOLLOWED BY ONE IN SCUNTHORPE
A new memorial in Brigg is to be followed by one for Scunthorpe.
Coun Rob Waltham, of Brigg, as the leader of North Lincolnshire Council, has revealed details and is now accepting designs for the steel town structure.
Brigg's recently erected Holocaust Memorial - made from Corten steel - was designed by a pupil at Sir John Nelthorpe School and installed on the Millennium Green, off Elwes Street (see picture above).
A moving service, remembering the millions who lost their lives in the Holocaust, was held alongside the memorial in January.
New Holocaust Memorial planned for Scunthorpe
FROM CHRIS O'ROURKE, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL
North Lincolnshire Council has announced plans to fund a new Holocaust Memorial to be built in Scunthorpe.
During the Holocaust of the Second World War, the Nazis systematically murdered six million Jews – and millions more from other groups based on their ethnicity, religion, ability and orientation – between 1941 and 1945.
North Lincolnshire Council has invited school pupils in Scunthorpe to come up with designs for the town’s new memorial. Secondary students studying art have been asked to come up with proposals for a metal sculpture around 6ft high and 3ft wide to take pride of place in a dedicated memorial garden.
Designs should be submitted to the council by Monday 18 March 2019 and the winning designer will be awarded a prize and see their design made a reality in Scunthorpe.
Council Leader, Cllr Rob Waltham, announced the new Holocaust Memorial for Scunthorpe, saying: “It is so important that we remember atrocities of the Second World War. This new memorial will help North Lincolnshire honour the millions of victims, including Jews, members of the LGBT community, disabled people, and other nationality and groups that the Nazis wrongly considered inferior.
“A prominent memorial in Scunthorpe will support our communities to come together to understand the persecution these victims faced and vow to never repeat it.”
Each year, the Mayor of North Lincolnshire hosts a ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January and, although the location of Scunthorpe’s memorial is yet to be determined, future ceremonies will be able to include a visit to the new structure.
The new memorial will be North Lincolnshire’s second to commemorate the atrocities of the Holocaust, after a memorial was unveiled in Peace Park in Brigg earlier this year. Brigg’s Holocaust memorial was designed by a student from Sir John Nelthorpe School and funded by Brigg Town Council and local businesses.
Designs should be submitted to Cllr Rob Waltham via email on rob.waltham@northlincs.gov.uk or by post to Cllr Rob Waltham, Civic Centre, Ashby Road, Scunthorpe, DN16 1AB.
