FROM NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL
North Lincolnshire Council is trying to find the relatives of two British veterans who were among the Arctic convoy during the Second World War - Norman Drury and Bertram F Whorton.
Russia's President Putin is awarding Ushakov medals to British veterans of the Arctic convoys to recognise their work during the Second World War, supplying Russia.
- Norman Drury lived on Scawby Road, Scawby Brook, just outside Brigg, and passed away in February 2015.
- Bertram F Whorton lived on Dunstan Villas, Kirton-in-Lindsey and passed away in April 2014.
If you knew either of these veterans, or you are a family member, please get in touch with our Civic Office on 01724 296346 or email anne.torn@northlincs.gov.uk
The medals are going to be presented in Doncaster at an event during February or March.
Other British veterans of the Arctic convoy were awarded their medals last year. This included Ernest Broome, father-in-law of Trevor Foster, the Deputy Mayor of North Lincolnshire.
Baroness the Coun Liz Redfern, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We have recently been contacted by the Russian Embassy to inform us of more war veterans from North Lincolnshire who will be awarded the Ushakov medal. This medal highlights the dedication of these men and honours the work they did during the Second World War in helping Russia.
“Sadly two of the veterans passed away last year, so we are hoping to track down their family members to accept the medals on their behalf. If you knew or are a family member of Norman Drury or Bertram F Whorton, please do get in touch with us. This is a truly wonderful achievement and it is only right these men are honoured for that.”
