Ambling about Brigg, I was naturally attracted to the gas excavations in the Market Place.
Taking a nose of what is in the hole, I was intrigued at the matrix of pipes - gas, water, drains.....beer cans, pizza box....
In one of the pits, there is evidence of an earlier tarmacked road surface - a good 2 feet (40cm) below the ballast for the present tessellated block paving.
Before the Ancholme Valley was drained, the area about the present Market Place was one of the few places in Brigg to be high enough to avoid being regularly awashed by flooding......and it does seem that geomorphically (that's a good word for Scrabble - and means ' related to landform', the Market Place has artificially increased in height as the town has superimposed one road on top of another over the recent centuries.
There are lots of squiggly lines about the place - they will make sense to someone clever, although I do know that 'yellow' = gas; 'blue' = water and 'red' is electrical power cables and a circular black blob is probably a bit of old discarded bubble gum!
I hope the gas guys are good at Lego and will remember which pipe joins which.
I was also bemused by the notice (below), presumably by default from some earlier event, on the surrounding security fencing.....or do they really intend to offer public guided tours of the site?
