THREAT TO ALLOTMENTS REMOVED

The long-term threat hanging over the future of Brigg’s popular allotments, on Grammar School Road, has been removed.
North Lincolnshire Council is going to a great deal of trouble to produce a blueprint outlining where new homes will be built in coming decades. However, having considered many proposed sites, the final submission draft of the North Lincolnshire Local Development Framework Housing Land Allocations Development Plan does not include the Town Council-owned allotments at the bottom of Grammar School Road.
“Our allotment site is no longer included and has been taken out,” Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard told Brigg Town Council’s monthly meeting.
Had it been decided to permit building on the allotments site, alternatives would have been provided. But clearly, plot-holders would have had to start from scratch elsewhere and have to put in a great deal of spadework to bring things up to the current standard.
Brigg also has allotments between Redcombe Lane and Atherton Way. The popularity of both sets of allotments continues to grow and demand exceeds supply as more people seek to grow their own veg – for nutritional and economic reasons.
There’s currently a waiting list for Town Council allotments. If you want further details, email the Town Clerk - enquiries@briggmarkettown.co.uk – or call in at the Town Council Office, Angel Suite, off Market Place, Brigg, on Monday or Thursday, 10am-noon.
