Brigg Town Council has announced the winner of a leading voluntary service award named in honour of a former long-serving town clerk (pictured above).
Councillors chose Tamsin Bennet, of the Guiding Association, as the 2019 winner of the Joseph J. Magrath O.B.E. Award for Public Voluntary Service to the Community of Brigg.
The council tells us: "Tamsin has been nominated for the Joseph J. Magrath Award for Public Voluntary Service for her commitment to Girlguiding in Brigg. Tamsin became a guide leader in 1994 and took over the Guide unit when there was a shortage of leaders and ensured the unit continued. Tamsin was, and still is, a keen camper and likes to ensure as many members of Guiding are able to participate in activities and push their boundaries to achieve positive outcomes. Tamsin has encouraged Guides with disabilities to attend Guide camps, to ensure that they are able to access as many opportunities as a Guide.
"Tamsin remained involved in Guiding as a Brownie Leader in Lincoln whilst at university. She was also a Guide Leader in Humberston before returning to Brigg. In January 2009 she again stepped in to support a group again in need of leaders, this time with the younger age group of Brownies, becoming the group’s Brown Owl. Tamsin has been involved with the group since then, and has offered a range of activities both in weekly meetings and additional weekend trips, camps, sleepovers and pack holidays.
"She has supported several leaders through their Leadership and residential qualifications. She offers support to leaders and young leaders to overcome their own challenges to achieve outcomes.
"Tamsin continues to promote diversity and inclusion for members of her unit and has in the past undertaken specialised training to enable young members with health conditions to fully participate in the group’s activities.
"Tamsin has encouraged young members to participate in town events, e.g. pump blessing, and will be leading the centenary celebrations of Brownies in Brigg during 2020.
"In addition to her services to Guiding in Brigg, Tamsin has served as County International Adviser and has been on the Management Team of Lincolnshire’s International Scout and Guide Camp, Poacher which is held approximately every 4 years on Lincolnshire Showground.
"She has also supported Regional events, including been on a subcamp team at a regional camp, Intranet in 2003. Tamsin has also led a regional, North East England Trip to Canada in 2002. In 2010 Tamsin was part of Girlguiding’s centennial celebrations, participating in the Centennial camp at Harewood House. Tamsin is always willing to assist other leaders and will help where there is a need from coming along to be an extra adult at a weekly meeting to stepping in to be an additional leader at camps or residential with neighbouring groups. Tamsin has also held the role of Division Residential Advisor.
"Tamsin, like many volunteers, shows commitment and dedication and deserves this award."
The Town Council says it is delighted to be given this opportunity to recognise the work she does for the benefit of young people in the Brigg area "and it was agreed that she is a most worthy recipients of the Joseph J. Magrath O.B.E. Award for Public Voluntary Service 2019, which will be presented during the Mayor’s Civic Charity Dinner on March 7."
