Hopes that Brigg may yet get a major refurbishment of the County Bridge have been expressed by the only Freeman of the Town, Tom Glossop, of St Helen's Road.
North Lincolnshire Council has repaired the historic bridge in recent months, removing the tatty metal railings in favour of something more in keeping with the Conservation Area, and a "listed" structure, undertaking resurfacing and reopening a long-closed walkway.
Tom Glossop, who campaigned long and hard through the Friends of the County Bridge pressure group for major refurbishment, stresses the application for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the long-planned major upgrade is "only dormant" and has not been ruled out by North Lincolnshire Council's recent improvements. Tom believes there is still a strong possibility of funding.
"It's of great interest to me to see this progressed," he told the Annual Brigg Town Meeting in the Angel Suite.
Coun Rob Waltham, a member of North Lincolnshire Council's ruling Cabinet and a Brigg town councillor, said the County Bridge project remained part of the heritage group's plans.
Coun Nigel Sherwood, fellow member of the Cabinet, explained North Lincolnshire Council's recent work on the bridge had been undertaken as a highways scheme.
"The County Bridge has been tidied up," he said. "It looks a lot better than it did."
