As the cricket season nears its conclusion Brigg Blog reflects on what has been an interesting virtually rain-free campaign for local teams in this hot and dry summer.
In the Lincolnshire County League, Brigg Town, Broughton 1sts and Broughton 2nds all have one match still to play, while Hibaldstow 1sts have two coming up.
Hibaldstow 2nds were in action on the final day of the Mick Walker North Lindsey League season yesterday (Sunday, September 4). And their match proved to be very high scoring.
Outcasts 3rds rattled up 244 for seven on their Hirst Priory ground near Crowle, with Hibaldstow making 190 for seven in reply.
Hibaldstow all-rounder Tom Taylor was unbeaten on 98 at the end of the 40th and final over, having earlier taken three wickets for 23 runs.
This was the only North Lindsey game played yesterday.
Hibaldstow end the campaign at the foot of Division Two, with Broughton 3rds one place above them, having already completed their programme.
Alkborough 2nds finished top of this section with Outcasts 3rds the runners up.
The league has thanked Jo Walker for continuing sponsorship, in memory of husband Mick who was a very well-known local umpire and umpires' appointments secretary.
Scunthorpe Town Development won Division One, with Appleby-Frodingham 3rds in second place.
Brigg Town, which first joined the North Lindsey League in 1979, has not competed in the Sunday competition for many years.
Lincolnshire - bidding to become champions of what used to be known as the Minor Counties Championship - were bowled out for 176 yesterday (Sunday) by Berkshire in the NCCA final at West Bromwich. Rain then stopped play, which will hopefully resume today.
Lincs, as champions of the East, are playing West winners Berks to decide the overall champions in a decider over two innings and four days.
Many notable cricketers from Brigg have gone on to join the Appleby-Frodingham club in Scunthorpe, including John and Carl Taylor, Graham Day, Dylan Hildreth, Martin Willerton and Patrick Kenny.
On Saturday (September 3) the steelworks club, of the Yorkshire League, made a presentation to stalwart ex-player and official Alan Pilgrim, and renamed the Brumby Hall ground's pavilion in his honour.
