BRIGG SCHOOL REUNION HIT FOR SIX
On a Friday at this time of the year we would normally be previewing a Brigg school reunion.
Former pupils of Sir John Nelthorpe School and a few others old enough to have been educated at Brigg Grammar (pre-1976) meet up on a Friday evening in early July.
A friendly game of cricket on the school field is followed by a social get-together at a nearby pub, often Wetherspoon's White Horse at the top of Grammar School Road.
Sadly, the Coronavirus-related lockdown has not only curtailed social gatherings and schooling but also amateur cricket matches, which are stil awaiting government approval to restart.
So unless things change in the very near future, there is no prospect of a Briggensians' Association summer sport reunion in 2020, although the White Horse social venue, and a number of other Brigg pubs, will be reopening from tomorrow (Saturday).
The association has been arranging Old Boys v School cricket matches since the 1920s.
This year's annual Briggensians' dinner 2020 just beat lockdown in mid-March. However, with concerns already being expressed about the pandemic, a number of people who had bought tickets made last-minute decisions not to turn up at Elsham Golf Club that Saturday evening.
Even then, traditional handshakes between old school chums were declined - politely - by many of those who did support the dinner.
