KEEPING UP AN OLD BRIGG TRADITION

It is always good to see old Brigg traditions kept going, year by year.
So  Brigg Blog is pleased to be able to inform readers that the Brigg Town Council Civic Service is coming up.
It will be held on Sunday, July 9 at St John's Church, in the town centre, from 3pm.
Our Town Mayor and members of the Town Council will be joined by civic leaders from other towns and villages and by the Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Coun Peter Clark, pictured.
He is now a representative for the Barrow area but is a former Brigg resident.
The annual civic service dates back many decades.
There's an old Lincolnshire Times picture that has survived showing Canon Chappell welcoming councillors to a civic service at St John's in the 1960s.
But we think this annual event may date back to the very early days of the Urban District Council which was created in the 1890s.
As earlier forms of local government tended to be church-related, such as The Vestry, there is likely to have been something akin to a civic service going back to the days before St John's Church was built in the 1840s.
For centuries, much of what is now Brigg fell within the boundaries of Scawby, Wrawby, Broughton and Bigby for the purposes of what then passed for local government.
