FROM CHRIS O'ROURKE NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL
Love Your Local Market is back for 2016 from 17 to 31 May. We will be hosting events across our markets to spread the love of markets and entertain some happy shoppers!
The Love Your Local Market campaign started five years ago to help celebrate the long-standing tradition of markets in the UK. In North Lincolnshire, we have markets in Ashby, Brigg and Scunthorpe as well as various speciality market events held throughout the year.
To celebrate our fantastic local markets in North Lincolnshire, we will be holding a number of events for market shoppers:
Thursday 19 May
North Lincolnshire Health Trainers will be coming to Brigg Market to give information of healthy eating alongside their fruit smootie maker tasters. Why not come along and have a go between 9am and 12.30pm.
Over at Ashby Market, talented young singer Evangeline Barnby will be performing musical numbers from throughout the ages to entertain shoppers.
Friday 20 May
The Health Trainers will be coming to Scunthorpe market from 9am to 12.30pm to continue their healthy eating campaign. Our Street Sport will be getting in on the action in Library Square between 10am and 2pm with their sport challenges. See how far you can get up the leader board!
Saturday 21 May
Local chef, Nigel Brown, will be at Scunthorpe Market showing off his skills with some fantastic cookery demonstrations throughout the day. Using produce you can buy from the market, Colin will be with dishing up some exciting meal ideas that you may never have thought of!
Thursday 26 May
The Health Trainers will be taking their information stand to Ashby Market between 9am and 12.30pm.
Saturday 28 May
The last day of our celebrations will see dancers from Westcliffe Twirlers performing on The Podium at Scunthorpe Market.
Over at Brigg Market, students from the Humber UTC will be showcasing their model eco house and demonstrating the need for renewable energy and engineers in our area.
Winteringham Fields chef and local celebrity, Colin McGurran, will be doing a book-signing at the Tourist Information Centre in the Buttercross between 10am and 12pm and Evageline Barnby will be back performing to the delight of shoppers.
Coun Rob Waltham, of Brigg, Deputy Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “More and more people are returning to local markets for their shopping on a weekly basis to make sure they get the freshest produce and to help support local traders. The expertise of the stall-holders and the friendly service they provide gives market shopping a personal touch and keeps people coming back.
“We’re celebrating our markets in North Lincolnshire and giving something back to shoppers with live entertainment and exciting displays as part of the Love Your Local Market campaign.
“Head down to your local market, you might be surprised what you can find!”
