BRIGG FOLK WALKING THEIR WAY TO HEALTH

Brickyard Lane in Wrawby - one of the recommended walks from Brigg
FROM NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

The Walking the Way to Health scheme is proving to be extremely popular in North Lincolnshire with 8,270 attendances this year so far. And a couple of routes are centred on Brigg (see links below).
People have the choice of 95 different walking routes that are three miles and 10 short routes that are one mile as part of the scheme. Since April 2013, 421 people have joined in the health walks.
There are 56 trained volunteers that lead all of the walks and each of the walks are supported by at least two volunteers.
Walking the Way to Health is an initiative that aims to encourage you to walk in your own community. Being physically active on a regular basis can significantly improve your health and fitness. Walking is ideal for building exercise into your everyday life. It is also a perfect way to see the natural environment around you.

Regular walking can have many positive affects on your lifestyle and can improve:
  1. Confidence
  2. Stamina
  3. Energy levels
  4. Weight control
  5. Immune system
  6. Life expectancy

It can also reduce the risk of:
  1. Strokes
  2. High blood pressure
  3. Stress and anxiety
  4. Coronary heart disease
  5. Bowel cancer
  6. Arthritis
  7. Poor sleep patterns

It’s not just health benefits that Walking the Way to Health offers, it is a great way of meeting new people and getting out and about in your local area.
It is recommended that you aim to build up to 30 minutes of brisk walking, five times a week. You are encouraged to walk at your own pace, but at a pace that makes your heart beat a little faster and breathing a little quicker.
Everyone is welcome to take part in the led walks that are all free. There is no need to book, just turn up on the day and find one of the walk leaders.
Coun  Carl Sherwood, of Brigg - Cabinet Member for Customer Services,  Sport and Leisure, said: “This is excellent news that so many people are joining in the Walking the Way to Health walks. We have seen a continuous increase over recent years in the numbers of people taking part, let’s hope this keeps on increasing year-on-year. Walking and keeping active can have many benefits on your lifestyle, so I would encourage people join in these great walks – there’s plenty to choose from.”
