The Rotary Club of Brigg held its annual International Charity Auction Night at the Kar Restaurant in Brigg on Thursday 29th March. The venue was packed to capacity with Rotarians, their guests and representatives from local businesses.
A number of ‘Promises’ were auctioned to raise money to support local causes and overseas charity projects. Cases of fine wines, jewellery, paintings, and a variety of other items were auctioned. Competition was particularly keen for ‘activity Promises’ including a day with the military, a flying lesson, advanced driving lessons, scuba diving, fly fishing, ploughing and tours of Lincoln Cathedral, the House of Commons or the Conoco Phillips Oil Refinery. A week in a cottage in the Dales raised the highest bid of £590.
In her welcome address Linda Hewlett-Parker, Chair of Brigg Rotary International Committee, explained that Rotary Clubs across the world are part of the largest humanitarian group in existence. They work together on a voluntary basis to raise funds for local and international charities. She explained that the monies raised on the evening would help to provide financial support to a number of local charities in the Brigg area.
Overseas donations include providing educational resources for blind/deaf pupils in South Africa as part of the ‘Schools4All’ scheme. The majority of the money will be used to support primary and secondary schools in poor areas of the Philippines. The primary schools will be provided with toilet blocks. Secondary students will be taught the skills involved in hydroponics and aquaponics. Equipment will be provided so that students can learn to grow vegetables and farm fish for food and to generate an income for their families.
Martin Robinson, President of Brigg Rotary said: "The evening was a great success. We have raised over £4,300. I would like to thank everyone who attended and made such very generous contributions to the list of Promises and the raffle."
