COUNCIL COMMITTEE ABOUT TO RULE ON BRIGG, SCAWBY & WRAWBY HOUSING SCHEMES

In addition to deciding a Brigg planning application to extend Cemetery Lodge on Wrawby Road and ruling on the conversion of Scawby Brook's King William IV pub into a dwelling with new properties built nearby, North Lincolnshire Council's Planning Committee will also consider proposed housing developments in Scawby and Wrawby during its meeting on Wednesday afternoon (March 24).
Outline planning permission for residential development is being sought for land to the rear of 36 Messingham Lane, Scawby - a site of approximately 2.05 hectares currently in arable use.
A report prepared for councillors to consider ahead of the meeting notes there has been an objection by Scawby Parish Council which says the proposed development lies outside the current development boundary for the village and is a greenfield site.
Wednesday's 'virtual' online committee meeting will also rule on details relating to the erection of a single dwelling  - "access, appearance, landscaping, layout and scale" - on land adjacent to Whitegate Stables, Star Carr Lane, Wrawby, for which outline permission has already been granted. A detached two-storey dwelling with garage is proposed.
A report by council staff says there has been an objection by Wrawby Parish Council "on the grounds that the proposed house is large, overbearing and out of character with its surroundings."
Councillors from wards across the district will now rule on these Brigg, Wrawby and Scawby parish applications. Coun Nigel Sherwood (Brigg & Wolds) chairs North Lincolnshire Council's Planning Committee.

BRIGG STREET WITH HISTORIC NAME WELCOMED A ROYAL VISITOR

Remembered by thousands of former Brigg secondary school pupils and one of the few streets in the town to receive a royal visit, Redcombe Lane today continues our long-running 'Then & Now' series spotlighting streets across the town as they once were and how they look today.
Glanford Secondary Modern School was built on land off Redcombe Lane in the mid-1950s when Lindsey County Council still managed local education. Its buildings later served Brigg Secondary School and the Vale of Ancholme Comprehensive before the creation of the Vale Academy. Brigg Sixth Form College also had a base here as well as at Sir John Nelthorpe School - a short walk away for staff and students moving between the sites. Latterly, adult education also had a base off Redcombe Lane to one side of the former Glanford site.
The Vale was subsequently allocated a brand new multi-million pound complex with vehicular access off Atherton Way, replacing its buildings near Grammar School Road (Westmoor House) and Redcombe Lane. However, the academy's extensive sports field still borders the lane today, although access has since been removed and protective fencing erected.
The school-related 'keep clear' parking restrictions are still evident on the road following demolition of all the buildings, together with speed-retarder humps on the highway. It is time they were removed?
The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) visited the Carers' Support Centre, on Redcombe Lane, in July 2014.
This lane has an interesting mix of houses - built over many decades.
The Dixon Close development (off Redcombe Lane near Grammar School Road) is a relatively recent addition.
Redcombe is an ancient descriptive term and was applied to a large agricultural field before changes were made to land management and ownership through Wrawby & Brigg 'enclosure' circa 1800.
The Newlands housing estate - connected to Redcombe Lane by Ash Grove and Almond Grove - was built by Brigg Urban District Council in the 1930s, mainly to rehouse families living in old courtyard properties adjoining the town centre.
At its western end, Redcombe Lane continues (pedestrian only) behind the rear gardens of properties on Cherry Tree Avenue (part of Newlands).
The surface underfoot has been improved, making it suitable for children and parents/guardians making their way to and from Brigg Primary School and the Vale Academy. This stretch is also very popular with dog-walkers (litter and 'poop' bins being provided).
Brigg Town Council operates well-established allotments on the corner of Redcombe Lane and Atherton Way - renting them to tenants wishing to grow their own fruit & veg for the table on various plots.

MEMORIAL TO NANCY TAGUE PLANNED IN BRIGG

Brigg Town Council is to consider buying and installing a memorial bench dedicated to Nancy Walker Tague who died recently, aged 63.
As a volunteer, she put a great deal of time and effort into charitable work, notably for the Brigg and District Veterans' Group, Soldiers Off the Street and Brigg in Bloom.
Councillors will be asked to approve the purchase of a memorial bench during their monthly meeting to be held online, using the Zoom platform, on Tuesday, March 23, from 7.15pm.
The site chosen for Nancy's bench may be revealed during the discussions.
As ever, Public Question Time forms part of the agenda. Local people wishing to take part in this, or observe/listen to the meeting as it takes place, should send an email to the Town Clerk via enquiries@briggmarkettown.co.uk so arrangements can be made to admit them to the meeting on the night.
Tuesday's session will include a report on North Lincolnshire Council issues relating to Brigg from local ward representatives  Coun Rob Waltham and Couns Carl & Nigel Sherwood.
Also open to interested members of the public next Tuesday is a meeting of the Planning & Environment Committee which will follow the Town Council session.
Among items to be considered is an application seeking approval to erect two-storey side and rear extensions at 8 Grammar School Road.

DETAILS OF 'VIRTUAL DINNER' & BRIGG SCHOOL REUNION ANNOUNCED

Former Brigg pupils across the world will be able to enjoy an event next week which replaces their annual reunion by using the latest technology.
The Briggensians' Virtual Dinner 2021, with guest speakers, will be held online, in virtual format. The traditional sit-down meal and get-together due to take place this month in Elsham Golf Club's restaurant had been cancelled because of the lockdown of licensed premises and restrictions on large gatherings.
The Briggensians' Association - representing former pupils and staff of Sir John Nelthorpe School, Brigg Grammar and Brigg Girls' High - will be hosting the online event on Tuesday, March 23, from 6pm (UK time) using the Zoom platform.
Speakers will be association chairman Clive Thompson, SJN Headteacher Rob Biglands and Holly Mumby-Croft, the MP for Scunthorpe and a past pupil of Sir John Nelthorpe School.
Retired Headteacher David Brittain, on behalf of the association, tells ex-pupils: "If you are a Briggensian and on the email circulation list then you will receive your invitation, with detailed instructions on how to join the meeting, over the next few days."
If you are a Briggensian but not on the regular list, you can register with Dave Brittain dave.brittain@talktalk.net or Helen Cresswell hcresswell@westrum.co.uk directly or via the Briggensians website. You should give your name, as on the school register, plus entry date, as confirmation.
Those unable to log in live next Tuesday, perhaps due to being in a different time-zone, should note that the organisers "will provide alternative access for seven days following the Zoom meeting."
David Brittain adds: "We are hoping this will create a sense of occasion and we will leave the meeting open following the speeches for 20 minutes to allow for conversation between members.

Brigg Blog expects this global link-up to prove popular as it is the first ever held, on this scale, for Briggensians.

PLAN TO CREATE NEW BRIGG TOWN CENTRE BAR STILL AWAITING DECISION FROM COUNCIL

Six months have now elapsed since plans to create a new licensed bar, apartments and offices in Brigg town centre were revealed.
North Lincolnshire Council received a planning application and another seeking listed building consent to convert the former HSBC bank premises at 27 Market Place. The scheme was made public, through the council, on October 14, 2020.
A decision is still awaited from local planners.
Brigg Town Council - consulted as part of the planning process - told the North Lincolnshire authority on October 29 that it had no objections to the scheme.
Twelve comments - generally in favour of the development - were received from the public in October and early November during the consultation period.
North Lincolnshire Council's conservation officer said in mid-November: "There is no objection to the change of use of the ground floor to a licensed bar and the upper floor to residential/offices. This enables a use for the building with acceptable impact on its significance. The building has been altered internally in the past but has retained its external appearance which is only been altered with minor changes."
North Lincolnshire Council's environmental protection department said: "There is the potential for noise disturbance from activities in the proposed licensed premises to impact on residents in the proposed residential flats as well as the wider community."
This application does not appear in the list for consideration at the next monthly meeting of North Lincolnshire Council's Planning Committee on Wednesday, March 24.

WORLD CUP SERIES EVENT COMING TO BRIGG

Two major annual Spring events in Brigg are going ahead as planned. And one of them "forms part of the World Quadrathlon Federation World Cup series."
The LincsQuad group has arranged its Keyo Brigg Bomber Standard Distance and Middle Distance Triathlons for Sunday, May 30 - based at Ancholme Leisure Centre, Scawby Brook (starting early morning).
Sponsored by well-known Brigg company Keyo Agricultural Services, both will involve competitors swimming in the River Ancholme (wetsuits mandatory!), cycling along local roads (Brigg, Hibaldstow and Redbourne) and a 10k run along the river towpath from Brigg to Broughton Bridge and back.
In addition, the Middle Distance Quad includes a 7k kayak section on the River Ancholme - one lap around Island Carr.
Entries are now being invited by the organising group.
View the Standard Distance details here...
View details of the Middle Distance Quad (part of the World Cup Series) here...
LincsQuad stresses that due to Covid regulations there will be no mass starts; competitors will be allocated staggered start times. Presentations will follow at the finishing line.

DECISION PENDING ON PLAN TO CONVERT HISTORIC PUB NEAR BRIGG INTO DWELLING

A pub site within walking distance of Brigg - earmarked for conversion to residential accommodation - is about to be visited by the members of North Lincolnshire Council's decision-making Planning Committee.
Councillors are considering an application which seeks permission to convert the early 19th century King William IV at Scawby Brook into a dwelling; outline planning permission is also being requested for the erection of three dwellings on land behind the licensed premises off Scawby Road.
This 'hybrid' application was first considered by the committee during its February meeting. But rather than reaching their decision there are then, councillors instead voted to hold a site visit before making a ruling.
The scheme outlined for the 'King Billy' will now be decided during the committee's next 'virtual' meeting (held online) on Wednesday afternoon (March 24) after councillors have been to take a look at the site in Scawby Brook.
A statement submitted with the application included a section headed 'Loss of public house' which asked planners to note "there have been numerous attempts to market the pub for sale which have not resulted in any offers being made."
Over many years the King William IV has been visited by many people from Brigg and elsewhere in the district, keen to enjoy its range of fine meals.

In the 1980s a successful local football club, known as King Billy FC, was established  - being based at and sponsored by the pub.
Scawby Brook had two hostelries for many decades - the other being the Horse & Cart (since demolished).
