REFUSED: PLAN TO BUILD 10 NEW HOMES IN BRIGG

North Lincolnshire Council's planning committee - meeting at Scunthorpe Civic Centre - has refused a scheme aimed at building 10 new homes in Brigg.
Reference was made to the decision by Coun Rob Waltham during last night's monthly meeting of Brigg Town Council, held in the Angel Suite (Monday, January 22).
Coun Waltham is the leader of North Lincolnshire Council, as well as serving on the town authority.
The 10 properties were earmarked for land to the west of Almond Grove, on the edge of the Newlands estate.
Although supporting the development of the land for housing in Brigg, the Town Council felt the increase in the number of dwellings raised concerns regarding the narrow vehicular access and lack of footpath access for pedestrians.
Lincoln-based Shirecare Property Co Ltd proposed a mix of two- three- and four-bedroom properties - semi and detached.
North Lincolnshire Council planning staff recommended the granting of permission, concluding that the proposed residential development  would not have an unacceptable impact on the character of the area, highway safety or the amenity of neighbouring residential properties.
The planning committee - made up of elected councillors - considered the application but turned it down. Read the reasons through this link...
Any individual or company refused planning permission has the right to lodge an appeal with the government, with an inspector then being assigned to consider whether or not to reverse the local authority's decision.

NEW CHALLENGE FOR BRIGG TOWN CRICKET CLUB

Brigg Town Cricket Club will face a fresh challenge in the Lincolnshire County Cricket League (sponsored by Readers)  during the 2018 season, starting in May.
The league has introduced a new cup competition, in which Brigg Town and Broughton 2nds will be taking part.
Rather than playing 45 overs an innings, teams in the new Supplementary Cup will be involved in much shorter matches - 30 overs a team, with no traditional tea being taken between innings - only a quick drink and maybe a biscuit or two.
There will also be a later (2pm) start to matches.
Early games will be on a 'round robin' league basis, with the winners of the four groups meeting in the semi-finals.
Brigg and Broughton 2nds have been drawn together in Group C alongside Barton Town 2nds and Alkborough 2nds.
This cup is experimental and the league will see how it goes before deciding whether to continue it during 2019 and beyond.
Brigg Town will be back playing at the Recreation Ground, off Wrawby Road,  this season now improvements have been completed - on and off the field.

LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE TO INTRODUCE DAY & NIGHT CARE IN THE AIR - BRIGG & DISTRICT INCLUDED

FROM MARIE WILLIAMSON

We are extremely proud and excited to share some fantastic news for 2018; the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is to extend its life-saving service to become operational 24-hours every day!
2017 was a fantastic year for our Charity – we not only took delivery of our new, state-of-the-art AgustaWestland 169 helicopter, but we also began to carry blood on board for the first time. These advancements have proven to be of great benefit to the pre-hospital critical care that our clinical crew already provides every day of the year.
As a further reflection of our commitment to providing a first-class Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, our Board of Trustees recently approved the decision to extend our helicopter’s operational hours.
Karen Jobling, CEO said: “Emergencies don’t stop at 7pm and nor will we. Thanks to our fantastic supporters, we are now in a position to fund the extension of our service and provide advanced clinical care to the people of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This extended service won’t happen overnight, but the wheels are already in motion towards the provision of a 24/7 helicopter emergency service for the communities we serve by the end of the year.”
As well as our state-of-the-art helicopter, our Charity also has a Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) which can quickly transport a Critical Care Paramedic and Pre-Hospital Care Doctor to a patient; this vehicle carries the same life-saving equipment as our helicopter. This means we can deliver an advanced level of clinical care and equipment to our patients that goes above and beyond that of a land ambulance. Our RRV will continue to be used when our helicopter is grounded due to bad weather or unplanned maintenance.
Doctor Susan Dashey, joint Clinical Lead at the Charity added: “I am delighted that we are gearing up to extend our pre-hospital emergency medical service. Trauma, serious illness, and cardiac arrests can happen anytime, day or night and, working with our partner East Midlands Ambulance Service, we have identified the need for an extended critical care capability in our area. It’s tremendous news that the Charity can continue to build upon its strong foundations of excellent clinical care in this way.”
Our commitment to fly 24 hours a day, together with the additional benefits that our new helicopter provides, along with the advancement in carrying blood on board, puts our Charity at the very forefront of medical aviation – somewhere we intend to remain!
We want to continue to provide our patients with the very best and most advanced critical care possible outside of a hospital environment. Hundreds of families still have their loved ones today because of the fast actions and expertise of our crew and this is something we are extremely proud of.
Increasing the hours that we fly is something that requires not only careful planning, but also significant investment. From a practical standpoint, we need additional crew, increased training, more aviation fuel and more medical supplies. Vitally, we also need to raise even more funds, as the cost to provide a 24-hour HEMS service will increase from £2.5m per year to around £4m.
Currently, our HEMS team operate 7 days a week between 7am and 7pm. The new 24-hour service will initially be for a two-year trial period during which the medical emergencies our helicopter is dispatched to will be closely reviewed and analysed to ensure we continue to provide the most appropriate critical care possible across our two counties.
Since our Charity began in 1994, we have received tremendous support from the people of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, something which we are extremely grateful for. It is this continued support that has enabled our Charity to consistently enhance the pre-hospital critical care that we can provide to our patients – giving them the very best chance of survival in what is often their greatest hour of need.
We are extremely excited about the opportunity to deliver 24-hour care in the air. If you can help us to do this, please get in touch today and give your support.

COUNCIL LEADER FROM BRIGG WELCOMES EXTENSION TO CHILDCARE FUNDING

FROM CHRIS O'ROURKE, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

Government plans to extend the tax-free childcare scheme to parents with children under nine years old have been welcomed by North Lincolnshire Council Leader, Cllr Rob Waltham (Brigg & Wolds).
The scheme was launched in April 2017 and allowed eligible parents or guardians of children under four to apply for up to £2,000 free per child (or £4,000 for children with a disability) towards childcare costs each year.
Following the Government’s extension to the scheme, parents with children under nine years old can now apply and start saving on their childcare.
In North Lincolnshire, an estimated 10,590 children between five and nine are now eligible, meaning thousands more families can now benefit from Tax-Free Childcare.
Cllr Waltham, pictured above, said: "The extension to the Tax-Free Childcare scheme will provide a welcome boost to North Lincolnshire families with children under nine who can now start to save up to £2,000 a year on childcare costs.
“Tax-Free Childcare is one of a number of government initiatives aimed at helping busy, working families with the costs of childcare. These initiatives gives parents more freedom to go back to work after the birth of a child or work part-time, without worrying about childcare costs.”
The Tax-Free Childcare scheme works as follows: parents and carers open a special account to save for childcare costs. For every 80p they deposit into the account, the government adds 20p, up to a maximum of £2,000 per child per year, or up to £4,000 if their child has a disability.
This means that including what you deposit, parents can use the scheme to pay for up to £10,000 of childcare costs per child, per year.
The Tax-Free Childcare scheme is expected to be extended to parents of children under 12 years old later this year.
You can find out more information about Tax-Free Childcare and the other government schemes available to help you pay for childcare through the Childcare Choices website at www.childcarechoices.gov.uk
