A WIZARD NEW SHOP OPENS IN BRIGG

REPORT AND PICTURE BY KEN HARRISON

It seemed that Harry Potter's Diagon Alley came to Brigg on Saturday.......but it was all smoke and mirrors! Spotted on the corner of Wrawby/Queen Street the wizard was loitering outside the newly opened Ecigwizard emporium.
As the  name indicates, the shop spells - sorry, sells - electronic cigarette paraphernalia.
But  after a short time, the wizard was gone in a puff....leaving only muggles trying out the various e-cig potions in the shop. Anyone want a game of Quidditch?

ABOVE: Mr Dickie Wizard and shop owner, Dawn Rickells.

BRIGG MAIL TRAIN MEMORIES

Former Brigg man Cliff Turner - now living in New Zealand - has emailed us to suggest that Jack Clarke took charge of his Grammar School tuck shop in the late 1930s.
Cliff says Jack had previously worked for W. B. Robinson, stationers, toy shop and newsagent - opposite  Dunn's shoe shop in Wrawby Street.
"Jack met the mail train every morning to pick up the newspapers and then got the papers ready for the delivery boys," says Cliff.
Our recent picture of the house that's now been fashioned from the former tuck shop created plenty of interest - particularly among former Brigg Grammar School pupils.
The early morning mail train was still operating in the late 1960s  and probably well into the 1970s. From memory it arrived about 4.30am - presumably from Manchester where some national newspapers had presses. The direct route to Brigg was the former Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway mainline.
Cliff was a newspaper delivery boy in his youth, as were many other Brigg Blog followers. We thought we got up early to get to the shop before 7am to pick up the papers for our rounds. But it's easy to forget that people like Jack, and Winnie Cammack at Richardson's in Wrawby Street, had been up and about for hours by the time we arrived on our bikes to start work.
W H Smith also had a town centre presence, of course, the newsagent's shop having long since been converted and now housing Scalinis fish and chip shop/restaurant.
When Brigg railway station was at its peak, it had a proper news stand on one of the platforms - further enhancing our town's link with the world of daily newspapers.

BRIGG CAR SALES SITE - WE THINK

Land near 15 Bridge Street, Brigg - picture on Nigel Fisher's Brigg Blog

We think this must be the site of a proposed car sales business in Brigg which is the subject of a "change of use" planning application now being considered by North Lincolnshire Council. The development site is described as being on land near 15 Bridge Street. So we went down for to double-check the location and found that No 15 is the terraced house below!
This land was formerly used for the sale of conservatories. And older Brigg folk will remember when Sid Whelpton's car showroom - long since demolished - stood there.
A block plan accompanying the application for  car sales further suggests that the land near No 15 is, indeed, the site we've pictured above.

NEAR THE OLD HOME OF BRIGG RAFT - BY KEN HARRISON

With BST (British Summer Time) approaching, I thought I'd send this snap of the view from my grandson's bedroom window, taken last week....the old Royal Observatory, Greenwich - Flamsteed House.
The green laser light is the Prime Meridian.
Flamsteed House is displays some of John Harrison's chronometers...and the Greenwich Planetarium is next door. Nearby is the National Maritime Museum - the old home of the Brigg Raft.

BRIGG RIVERSIDE WALL NEEDS TO LOOK GOOD, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL TOLD

When the wall near the White Hart pub in Brigg is refurbished it should be "aesthetically pleasing," a member of the public suggested at last night's Annual Town Public Meeting in the Angel Suite at which North Lincolnshire councillors were present.
John Thompson said the wall already dealt with further along the River Ancholme bank should have been "faced" with a different material.
North Lincolnshire Council announced a few weeks ago that the wall near the White Hart beer garden will be improved.
