QUEEN'S JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS IN BRIGG - THEN & NOW

Brigg is already planning how it is going to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee (70 years as reigning monarch) during a specially extended UK bank holiday in June this year.
Ten years ago - on January 9, 2012 - a meeting was held in the Angel Suite to begin formulating a programme of events to mark Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee.
Town councillors delegated to oversee the celebrations were joined by representatives of local groups and other community-minded members of the public.
Many ideas were forthcoming at the initial meeting 10 years ago and it was decided to hold a series of events throughout Monday, June 4, 2012 – some of them in the Market Place, others at the Recreation Ground “with satellite events branching off” – and an Angel Suite dance in the evening to round off the day.
It was agreed that representatives would discuss these ideas with their own organisations, the feedback to be considered at a further meeting in late January 2012 – again at the Angel "to firm up the timetable and to get down to detailed planning."
Brigg's Diamond Jubilee celebrations proved to be impressive and memorable.
It included a parade in which scores of Brigg residents made their way from the town centre to the Rec Ground via Cary Lane, Ash Grove, Redcombe Lane, Grammar School Road, Preston Drive and Woodbine Park.
Some weeks later Diamond Jubilee Committee members were officially thanked "for all their hard work in organising the celebrations enjoyed in Brigg."
That followed a proposal by the then Town Mayor, Coun Carl Sherwood, who said: "I just cannot say enough about what the committee did in such a short space of time."
Brigg has not left things late this time; planning for the Platinum Jubilee began several months ago, and again involves councillors, local groups and other members of the public.
Brigg Town Council's meeting towards the end of this month is expected to receive an update, including the proposed installation of an illuminated arch on the County Bridge.
