BRIGG TOWN FC 2 SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC 0 - PLAYED DECEMBER 3, 2013

BRIGG TOWN REPORT BY BOB TAYLOR

Ollie Fisher returned to the defence and Jamie Forrester replaced the cup tied Danny Buttle on the left wing when Brigg Town were hosts to Scarborough Athletic in the second round of the   Doodson Cup competition.
The home team forced a right wing corner in the opening minute but Arran Reid collected the cross confidently. In the next attack down the left wing, the ball was cleared from the goal area. Brigg goalkeeper Jake Turner was alert to clear the ball from the edge of his penalty area twice as the visitors pushed forward. Jamie Forester showed plenty of confidence to deliver a couple of telling crosses but these finished up out of play at the far side of the pitch. A free kick on the right wing from Scott Matthews went past the far upright post. Brigg created the first good opportunity of scoring when Jamie Forrester’s cross found Liam Dickens in front of goal but his header struck the cross bar. Then Michael Jacklin surged out of his defensive role and laid the ball on for Paul Grimes on the right wing to send over another  cross for Liam Dickens to head over the cross bar. The first goal came in the thirty fifth minute and was created by Paul Grimes after he chased a loose ball down the right wing and crossed it from the goal line for JORDAN THEWLIS to drive it into the back of the net from ten yards out. Two minutes, Brigg scored again when Paul Grimes received the ball at his feet from the left wing and was able to move it on for LIAM DICKENS to find the back of the net. In the last attack of the first half, Michael Jacklin met a left wing corner kick at the far post but his header went wide.
Michael Jacklin started the second half with a long range shot at goal but Arran Reid covered it well. Scarborough responded with a right wing attack but jake Turner saved from the ensuing cross. Scott Hellewell got his head to a free kick played into the area by Scott Matthews but he ball went past the top angle. Arran Reid did well to save at the feet of Jordan Thewlis inside the penalty area and then Paul Grimes was inches wide of increasing the lead after Jordan Thewlis slid the ball through to him. In the closing minutes, former Hull City player Bryan Hughes struck a fierce shot over Jake Turner’s goal but other than that, Brigg looked comfortably in control and managed to keep a “clean sheet” up to the final whistle, so progressing to the third round.
