BRIGG BLESSING OF THE PUMPS PREVIEW

The colourful Brigg Blessing of the Pumps event will take place tomorrow (Saturday, May 21) between 10am and 1.30 pm.
Brigg Town Business Partnership is again organising the traditional blessing of the two surviving water pumps.
The celebrations will start at 10am with Morris dancing in the Market Place by The Tatterfoals and Beverley Garden.
They will then dance around the town (Chapel Court, St John’s, Wrawby Street and The White Horse pub) coming together back in the Market Place for 11.30 where the parade of the dancing groups, Brigg Rainbows and Brownies, led by the Reverend Ian H. Wales, will move to the first pump outside the Nelthorpe Arms public house.
There will be Morris dancing, the blessing of the pump by The Rev Wales and flowers presented to the pump by the Rainbows and Brownies.
The parade then moves up Wrawby Street to the second pump outside the White Horse (Wetherspoon's) where the blessing of the pump is repeated.
The dancers will then dance in Chapel Court and outside Boots before parading down to the Market Place for a grand finale dance about 1.15pm.
During the morning when there is no dancing in the Market Place, you will be entertained to the music of the. Stark Raving Buskers.
This year the Partnership is very grateful to the Brigg & District Flower Society who will be “dressing” the two pumps and Tesco for providing flowers and Mollies for their support. The Brigg NISA Shop is also sponsoring part of the event and Brown and Co has generously sponsored the publicity.

I understand that the this tradition was re-established in 2013 to mark the 60th anniversary of Elizabeth 2nd however I've not been able to find any history about this tradition.

#Andrea...
It was initiate by BASH.. Something has only to happen once, then it suddenly becomes a tradition!
By the 3rd year, a vast mythical history will have developed.
Logic would indicate the pumps were installed circa
1870....long after Lizzie 2.
The Pump Blessing is like the legend of Robin Hood..it improves at each subsequent telling...
