ANY CONCRETE PROPOSALS FOR BRIGG PUB?
A future of a well-known Brigg pub is now the subject of speculation after these concrete blocks were put in place.
The Ancholme Inn – on Grammar School Road – has changed tenants down the years almost as often as some Brigg folk enjoy hot dinners. But this time things are different. Rather than just standing empty until the brewery finds another “taker” the extended concrete barrier has gone up.
It would seem the aim is to stop unwanted vehicles from taking residence on the site.
But this course of action was not followed during previous gaps in tenancy.
Having seen the concrete barrier put in place, some local people are making suggestions about what this might mean for the future of the site, with its extensive car park.
It is, after all, a pretty sizeable site. Ripe for re-development, perhaps?
The Ancholme was built in the early 1960s, primarily to serve the nearby council estates (Springbank and Hawthorn Avenue).
Most of us who have lived in Brigg a long time will have happy memories of attending fine functions down the years at The Ancholme, while some Blog followers will have been regulars at the hostelry - even up to last month.

It seems that every time now that someone spots a vacant property, or a blade of grass, rumour starts that the site is up for development.
But. I can't blame folks for thinking that because during the last five, or so years there has been a discernible increase with applications to develop previously-loved sites - Brock Ox, Glebe Rd school site and the in-filling with a couple of houses, here in there, to fill the odd gaps about Brigg.
Remaining in my conjecture mode, but donning my 'educated guesswork' hat, the Ancholme site is ideally situated as it backs onto the Keigar Homes estate.
Entrepreneurial commonsense would indicate that such a site, should it become vacant, is ripe for re-development. And Keigar Homes just have to have the essential utilities, sewers, gas and electrical power supplies just over the fence.
But whether any imagined re-development would make social, or logistical sense is somewhat different.
For example, both GRS and Glebe Road are already over-saturated with traffic. We do need more affordable housing in Brigg, but at what expense?
It is now come to a situation were, irrespective whether the Ancholme pub site is re-developed, or not, a rational study of the road and traffic flow networks in that part of Brigg needs to be examined and sensible and realistic suggestions made of how the already pressurised situation can be resolved.
Only after that has been achieved should further applications for development on, along, down, or near GRS, be considered.
Possible suggestions:
1. A one-way system on certain roads.
2. Create parking lay-bys on the Hawthorn Estate.
3. Give rear access to some residents on Glebe Rd to offer/encourage off-street parking.
4. Make all schools in Brigg boarding schools - kids only go home during holidays - thus school traffic is removed from the congestion equation!!!!
And I haven't even mentioned the possibility of a new Brickie Lane!!
