Coun Ann Eardley wanted to go even further, and cut vehicle speed to 30mph – but failed to gain sufficient support. She said there had been a number of serious accidents on that stretch of road.
Brigg’s decision to call for a reduction from 60mph to 40mph on the road to Wrawby came as part of a consultation exercise being undertaken by North Lincolnshire Council, which makes periodic reviews of speed limits across the district.
Brigg councillors also decided to press for a reduction in the 60mph speed limit on the A1084 from Bigby High Road and beyond the Brigg Garden Centre.
That will be more complicated to achieve, as the road crosses from North Lincolnshire into West Lindsey, whose highways are overseen by Lincolnshire County Council.
Coun Rob Waltham suggested there was particular need for a reduced speed limit near the bends in the road approaching Brigg Garden Centre.
Coun Penny Smith recalled that when the councils’ cross-border path was installed by for use by those visiting Brigg Garden Centre, the neighbouring council had also promised to look at the speed limit in its area.
“I think we should push for it again,” she suggested.

I would like to see this so-called evidence of serious accidents along the A18 between Brigg and Wrawby.
There needs to be a relationship between these 'serious accidents' and 'exceeding the speed limit' before anyone suggests that the speed limit be reduced.
Unnecessarily, reducing the speed limits can and does create its own accidents - drivers can become frustrated at 'enforced' limits and are more likely to take extra risks.
One needs to examine the frequency, type and severity of accidents along this stretch of road and then to establish their cause.....these causes could be related to signage, road design, drivers' inattention, poor driving skills, drink.....Just reducing the speed limit in anticipation that speeding is the main cause is false and will not necessarily reduce the rate and severity rate of road accidents.
Agreed. The main issue on that piece of road isn't speed, it's people turning right towards Brigg even if they can see you coming and there is insufficient time. Reducing the speed limit will increase neither the patience nor the courtesy of those drivers, quite the opposite I suspect.

Intending to continue travelling along the A18 towards Wrawby, I am wary of following cars indicating left to turn off along the B1206 at Barton Rd End particularly when vehicles are waiting to turn right from the junction.
There's been a number of occasions when drivers have pulled out in front of me - presumably assuming I too was intending to turn off the road.
This was not related to 'speeding', but careless driving.
The 'Give Way' sign could be replaced by a 'Stop' sign to emphasise the vulnerability of that junction.
