BRIGG FARMERS' MARKET DRAWS CROWDS

There was a bigger-than-normal attendance at Saturday’s Brigg Farmers’ Market, where many people took the opportunity to buy produce straight from the people who make it. Thoughts are already turning to the pre-Christmas Brigg Farmers’ Market, which always draws a huge crowd of eager shoppers to stock up on festive fare and goods. It will be held on Saturday, December 17, from 9am to 3pm. Make a note of the date.

CIRCUS MAY COME TO BRIGG IN SPRING

Brigg may be in line for a circus visit in 2012.
Pinder’s (All Human) Circus has approached Brigg Town Council to see whether there is a suitable location for a stay in town over three days next May.
When the issue was thrown into the ring at a meeting of the Town Council’s Policy Committee in the Angel Suite, Demeter House, off Bigby Street, was suggested.
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard was told to make inquiries with Demeter House and, if that proved unsuccessful, to forward the circus’s inquiry on to North Lincolnshire Council.
In the early 1960s, a circus came to Brigg Recreation Ground, then a facility operated by Brigg Urban District Council. As a boy, I can remember attending one of the shows. This circus featured performing animals, about which there seemed to be little or no debate half-a-century ago.
Circus Boy was also a very popular programme on TV during the same era. Didn’t its young star follow a clearly defined career path from the circus to become one of the Monkees?
Along similar lines, Billy Smart fronted a world-famous circus, while Bill Smart was a well-known and long-serving Brigg councillor.

BRIGG SITE WITH DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL

There used to be a handful of Brigg lock-up garages on this site, but they were knocked down some time ago.
The location of this expanse of concrete is West Square, close to the Keigar Homes’ development off Glebe Road, where Brigg County Primary School once stood.
The lock-up garages were once operated by Glanford Borough Council and I had one myself for a spell in the late 1970s. In addition to keeping the rain and snow off my Mini, it was close-season home to a range of Brigg Town Cricket Club equipment, including pads and bats.
Who knows what the future may hold for this small part of Brigg?

BRIGG TREES FROM ROTARY

Brigg Town Council is being asked to guide guidance to Brigg Rotary Club on suitable locations for three new trees to be planted in the town.
This is one of the items to be considered at the Town Council's monthly meeting tomorrow (Monday) in the Angel Suite (7.30pm). The meeting is open to the public.
Brigg trees come and go, of course, down the decades. Pictured here is the stump of a very mature one that had to come down in the lovely avenue along Cadney Road. It had been first in line in the right. Did North Lincolnshire Council eventually remove the stump and plant a replacement sapling?
If not, perhaps this could be put forward as a possible site for one of the proposed new trees.
Another one to come down in recent years was at Brigg Recreation Ground, close to the car park. It was a poplar, we think.

BRIGGS COMES TO BRIGG

It was a pleasant surprise today to meet the new manager of the Brigg Branch of the Lloyds TSB Bank, in Wrawby Street, when I popped in and requested to see someone about a minor matter.
For Pete Briggs was a pupil of Brigg Grammar School in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when he was one of the many boys who travelled in by bus every day from Keelby, for whom he still plays cricket in the Lincolnshire League.
It’s good to see my old schoolmate taking charge, but also sad that the ever-helpful Nigel Walker has ended his spell as boss of the Brigg branch.

BRIGG CONSIDERS DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

It will become clearer next Monday how Brigg plans to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
Brigg Town Council's monthly meeting will receive and consider a report and recommendations from the Joint Working Group with Brigg District Lions "and determine the way forward regarding events to mark the Diamond Jubilee in Brigg."
Monday's meeting will be in the Angel Suite, from 7.30pm. The usual 15 minutes will be set aside at the start for Public Question Time, during which townsfolk can raise issues.
If you plan to go along to ask a question, or merely to sit and listen to the discussions, please note that you need to use the rear entrance to the Angel (see picture).
The meeting of Brigg Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee, planned to take place before the Council meeting, has been cancelled due to there being "no business to transact."

LOTS GOING ON IN BRIGG TOMORROW

Whether your interesting in shopping or sport, Brigg offers much tomorrow.
Kick off the day with a visit to the monthly farmers' market, from 9.30am.
Operating alongside the market will be a balloon race competition (with £100 prize) a visit by Pudsey Bear, helping Children in Need, and judging of the best shop window in Brigg.
Have a bit to eat in one of the town centre fast-food outlets, cafees or hostelries.
And, in the afternoon, if you are a football fan, visit the Hawthorns to watch Brigg Town FC take on Stamford.
If you've yet to get some balloon race tickets, there are widely on sale in town centre businesses and cost just £1.
The balloon race, including the release into the skies of North Lincs, is being organised by members of the Brigg Town Business Partnership.
Remember: Brigg is Best.

It operates www.briggmarkettown.co.uk and improvements are earmarked to the design.

Renewed planning permission has been granted for a new housing development close to Brigg Market Place and the Angel.

NO LIKEY NO LIGHTY - BUSY BRIGG JUNCTION

It must be a week since Brigg Blog spotted faulty traffic lights in Cary Lane, Brigg. If you are trying to exit this road to join the A18 it's the set of lights on the left, nearest Barnard Avenue. Only the red sequence seems to be affected, as far as we can see. As there's a secondary set of lights on Cary Lane which is working OK (some yards behind the faulty set), this situation doesn't matter unduly, unless you are driving the first car in the queue to exit Cary Lane. Then it's a question of trying to view the lights to the left, almost above your driving position.
Hopefully, someone from North Lincolnshire Council will soon be sent out to rectify the situation.

WHEN THE BOAT COMES IN - BRIGG STYLE

Glanford Boat Club, on Island Carr, Brigg, was a hive of activity when "Lifting Day" saw members' craft taken from the River Ancholme onto dry land for the autumn and winter months. This annual procedure offers security and the chance for a bit of maintenance during the close season. The big cranes will re-appear to put the boats back in the water next spring.

BRIGG DIAMOND JUBILEE PARTY PLANNED

Efforts are being made to organise a street party on Brigg's Woodbine Estate, to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next June.
Coun Jane Kitching is welcoming expressions of interest and suggestions.
This idea follows unsuccessful attempts to form a Residents' Association for Hawthorn Avenue (PICTURED ABOVE), Woodbine Avenue, Central Square and East Parade.
That failed due to lack of interest.
To find out more, email kitchingjane@gmail.com
NF adds: Hearing the phrase "Woodbine Estate" used by Coun Jane brought back memories. It's a long time since I've heard it mentioned. It is, however, perfectly correct as a description of this area of Brigg.

BRIGG GETS READY FOR WINTER'S WORST

Brigg Town Council is being given a tonne of bagged salt and three roadside bins so it can help combat the worst of the winter weather in the coming months.
The allocation has come from North Lincolnshire Council, which many residents expect to clear footpaths and roads of ice and snow.
A small group of town councillors has been assigned to look further into how best to deploy Brigg’s allocation.
However, when the Policy Committee discussed the issue, Coun Mike Campion suggested the North Lincolnshire Council measures did not seem very well thought-out.
He pointed out that the Town Council had nowhere to store the salt, and wondered who was going to replenish the bins on the streets once they had been emptied.
“We haven’t got the manpower to fill them up,” he reminded fellow councillors.
And he asked: “How can we pick sites for three bins in a place the size of Brigg?”
But Coun Julian Kidd pointed out the measure did mean at least three areas were going to benefit. Coun Kidd wondered about entering into a ‘service level agreement’ under which North Lincolnshire Council would refill Brigg’s salt bins.
Coun Alec Depledge pointed out that such an agreement might also resolve the issue of where to store Brigg’s salt.
Coun Ed Arnott wondered whether community-minded Brigg businesses with suitable yards might assist with the storage. He asked whether other councillors thought three bins to serve the entire town to be “a drop in the ocean.”
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard stressed North Lincolnshire Council would clear the town centre in times of bad weather.
Suggested sites for the three Brigg bins, put forward by councillors at their meeting, were:
Churchill Avenue
Almond Grove and
Springbank/Grammar School Road.

North Lincolnshire Council came in for heavy criticism last winter, when many Brigg streets remained covered in ice and snow for days without any machinery being sent to tackle the problem.
A thorough review has been undertaken since then by the unitary authority and improvements put forward, including bins and salt for parishes and towns.

BRIGG'S DID NOT PROVE A BRIDGE TOO FAR

Andrew Percy, centre, Conservative MP for Brigg and Goole, with Coun Rob Waltham, left, and Coun Carl Sherwood, on the County Bridge yesterday.

Brigg County Bridge has been given a facelift after calls for investment going back many years.
The pledge to improve the bridge came earlier this year from Conservative councillors on the North Lincolnshire authority. And they've carried it through, following their election success.
One of the walkways has been reopened after being shut to the public for many years, while replacement metal railings have been added - much more in keeping with the Conservation Area and the grade two listed building status of the early 19th century landmark.
Couns Nigel and Carl Sherwood and Rob Waltham were keen to show the work to Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy when he visited Brigg yesterday to attend the Remembrance Sunday parade, service and wreath-laying.
