BRIGG TOWN COUNCIL CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH-ON 2013 WITH FESTIVE FAIR AND MARKET STAGED BY OUR LIONS
The Deli Diner serving freshly cooked, piping hot food after last night's Christmas lights switch on in Brigg town centre |
The Brigg town centre Christmas lights - provided by our Town Council - were switched on at a ceremony held in the Market Place last night. A big crowd turned out to watch and then enjoy the accompanying Brigg District Lions' fair and market, with stalls throughout the town centre and a craft section in the Angel Suite. Brigg shops stayed open until 9pm, in some cases, to offer people the chance to snap up Christmas gifts. The weather was cold and windy, but the rain held off.

HOW LONG SINCE YOU'VE BEEN TO BRIGG MILLENNIUM GREEN ?
Brigg Millennium Green on Elwes Street - just a few yards from the Old River Ancholme - was a project that came to fruition for the year 2000. It's a place people can visit if they are seeking a bit of peace and quiet, or wish to soak up a few rays in the summer. There's not much going on during the colder months when the grass isn't growing. But, looking to the future, the Green may appear on the agenda of a Brigg Town Council meeting in a few months' time.

If you are reading this and have never attended this annual extravaganza then we really recommend that you pop along. It's always a great night and there's loads to enjoy.
We recommend you get into the Market Place by 4.45pm - ahead of the lights switch on at 5pm. It will be done from a temporary stage. And the cast of the Scunthorpe Plowright Theatre panto can be relied upon to entertain the crowds.
To put people in the mood we've included a few of our pictures taken at the 2012 event.

BRIGG ROUNDABOUT SIGNS NOW NEED PERMISSION
A rather unusual Brigg application for permission is now going through the planning system.
Advertisement consent is being sought to retain four signs on the roundabout near Tesco - at the junction of the A18 with Atherton Way.
North Lincolnshire Council Neighbourhood Services, of Scunthorpe Civice Centre, is the applicant, and North Lincolnshire Council planners will make a decision.
The application suggests that the "poll mounted in ground" signs have been "in situ" on the roundabout since 2011.
If you didn't know, such matters fall under the Town and Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) (England) Regulations 2007.
Consulted about the application, North Lincolnshire Council highways has raised no objections. Nor has Brigg Town Council - the matter being considered by the Planning and Environment Committee at a meeting in the Angel Suite on Monday.

NO CHRISTMAS HUMBUG IN BRIGG
There was no evidence of Mr Scrooge or Christmas Humbug when Brigg Town Council had to consider unexpected expenditure on the town centre illuminations.
Under the heading Christmas Lights Expenditure, they were asked to endorse the increased expenditure incurred due to the need for replacement and re-testing of a series of failed anchor bolts.
Councillors at Monday night's meeting in the Angel Suite gave their approval, Coun Mike Campion pointing out that people come from a very wide area to admire the Christmas decorations.
"This is something that's worth doing," he added.
QUICK REMINDER: The Christmas lights will be switched on, with due ceremony, from a stage in the Market Place at 5pm on Friday (November 29). Brigg District Lions' extensive Christmas Fayre, with many stalls, will then get into full swing. Most Brigg shops will also be staying open late for people to do their Christmas shopping.

POSITIVE ACTION BY TESCO REPORTED TO BRIGG TOWN COUNCIL
Brigg Town Council has received an assurance from Tesco that it has already taken steps to deal with litter near Spring's Parade.
The council flagged up concerns to the retail giant a month ago and a very comprehensive reply was received at Monday's meeting in the Angel Suite.
Tesco said it took the issue very seriously and was determined to be a good neighbour in Brigg. A spokesman said monthly clean-ups would become weekly.
Coun Mike Campion welcomed that response, saying there had been a marked improvement already. "Let's hope that's the end of the issue," he added.
Coun Ann Eardley suggested Tesco ought to knock down the large metal unit on the edge of its car park, which she described as an eyesore seen by many people as they arrived in Brigg.
Tesco acquired the former Lidl store, and the area around it, but then put its re-development plans on hold. Lidl opened a brand new store across the A18, off Atherton Way.

BRIGG AREA MAY SEE NEW SPEED LIMIT
Brigg Town Council has heard suggestions about a new 50mph limit on the edge of the town.
It would affect Bigby High Road but the Lincolnshire County Council part - beyond Brigg Garden Centre - and perhaps go as far as the turning to Howsham.
Brigg Blog will endeavour to gain further information from Lincolnshire County Council and report back.

£500 BRIGG SUPPORT FOR VOLUNTEER CAR SERVICE
Brigg Town Council is granting £500 to the Volunteer Car Service - a decision being taken at last night's monthly meeting in the Angel Suite.
The request for community funding was accompanied by statistics showing an increasing number of Brigg people being helped by the scheme.
During the past 12 months, 2,200 "passenger journeys" were for Brigg residents - an increase of 15 per cent on the previous year.
Transport is made available for people who may need to get to doctors' and dentists' surgeries, opticians, and to banks and shops. However, the service says it has always struggled to recruit volunteer drivers in Brigg and could do with more.
Coun James Truepenny told last night's meeting that this service was vitally important and he was very much in favour of supporting it.
Coun Rob Waltham described it as a fantastic service and suggested the Press might help by publicising the need to recruit additional drivers.
Brigg Blog was first in the queue and if any of our followers wish to find out more about volunteering for this worthy cause, here are the contact details: Robin Bradshaw, transport solutions co-ordinator, Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council, Registrar's Office, Baysgarth House, Caistor Road, Barton. Tel 01652 637700 or email robin.bradshaw@hwrcc.org.uk
Coun Ann Eardley suggested the appeal should also be included in a future issue of the Brigg Matters newsletter.
The service extends to many rural areas of North Lincolnshire, with 7,800 passenger journeys arranged in the past 12 months (excluding Scunthorpe and Bottesford).

HAVING A SAY ON HOW BRIGG DEVELOPS IN THE FUTURE 'TO BENEFIT OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN'
Brigg Town Council last night (Monday, November 25) discussed the concept of a Neighbourhood Plan (NP) for our community, and a Brigg Town Planning Forum.
In the Government's own words: "A neighbourhood development plan establishes general planning policies for the development and use of land in a neighbourhood, like: Where new homes and offices should be built what they should look like. The plan can be detailed or general, depending what local people want."
Coun The Rev Alec Depledge, Deputy Town Mayor, gave a well-received introduction to his colleagues at their monthly meeting in the Angel Suite. His comments were well received....
Coun The Rev Alec Depledge, who played a central role in establishing the Community-Led Plan for Brigg and who last night spoke about Neighbourhood Planning. |
Mr Chairman, councillors -
For many months the subject of Neighbourhood Planning has bobbled around, on and off agendas, either in Full Council or in Committees, without being resolved. I must confess to a certain vacillation during that time – arising from reservations to do with timing, cost and motivation, and while some of those reservations remain I have concluded that a decision in favour of a Neighbourhood Plan will go some way in showing this Council’s commitment towards delivery of the Community-led Plan.
Let me explain: As architects of the Community-led Plan (CLP) we anticipated the possibility of a NP, indeed this is referred to by name in several places. The CLP (in section 4.4) also calls specifically for the formation of a “Brigg Town Planning Forum”, which will draw up “an integrated planning approach document” covering potential areas of development, appropriate types of development, and will especially consider impact of such development on the existing infrastructure and facilities, as well as maintaining the essential ‘character’ of Brigg as a historic market town.
In line, therefore, with that key proposal of the CLP, I wish to support Cllr. Waltham’s proposal that BTC initiates a Neighbourhood Plan, and to facilitate this I propose further that BTC establishes a “Town Planning Forum” whose responsibility will be to fully research, apply for and produce a Neighbourhood Plan. Members of this Forum, as the Community-led Plan suggests, should be drawn from among elected representatives of BTC and NLC, along with other stakeholders/interested parties, and be held fully accountable by this Council.
My proposal allows for members of the community, not only to have a strong voice through consultation, but also to actively participate in the formulating of their own Neighbourhood Plan – surely the key idea behind Neighbourhood Planning in the first instant
My proposal will also, it is hoped, take the workload away from our Full Council and staff, and place it firmly on the shoulders of the Forum, whose members will be suitably committed to the task.
Finally, Mr Chairman, I believe this is not simply about my own present generation, but also concerns the leaving of a legacy which will be of benefit to our children and grandchildren. Therefore I commend this proposal to Council. Thank you.
NF ADDS: Neighbourhood planning was introduced through the Localism Act 2011. Neighbourhood planning legislation came into effect in April 2012. In May this year the Government introduced a £9.5 million, 2-year programme to support communities to progress their Neighbourhood Development Plans and Neighbourhood Development Orders. It says: "The programme will offer hands-on, practical support and grants of up to £7,000 per neighbourhood area."

A TOUCH OF FROST IN BRIGG CATCHES OUT THE WEATHER MEN
We deliberately checked the weather forecast last night before going to bed and there was no suggestion of temperatures below freezing this morning. Yet, before 7am the car parked in the drive was thick with frost.
It's clearly time for us to dig out the trusty pine cone and put it on the windowsill. More reliable, perhaps, than the high-tech way of doing things!
Just as well we bought some de-icer in Brigg Tesco on Sunday...even if, due to roadworks, it took us five times as long as it normally would.

BRIGG TOWN FC 1 NEWCASTLE TOWN 2 - REPORT BY BOB TAYLOR
Jake Turner
made his home debut in goal for Brigg Town who were looking for a win to change
fortunes in their current poor run of results.
The presence and striking
ability of Paul Grimes was sadly missed up front where Jordan Thewlis partnered
Ryan Paczkowski. From the kick off the Brigg team forced a corner kick on the
right wing but goalkeeper David Parton confidently held the cross in his
area. Then Ollie Fisher found Danny
Buttle in space on the left wing but his deep cross into the penalty area was
cleared. Brigg continued to push forward with attacks down the left wing but
the crosses into the goal area were well defended and finally cleared after a
foul against Ryan Paczkowski for pushing. Brigg opened the scoring in the
eighteenth minute of the game after the ball was played from the centre circle
to Jordan Thewlis on the right side of the penalty area and he rolled it on for
GEORGE ZUERNER to find the back of the net from ten yards out.
Newcastle
responded and won a free kick on the left outside the Brigg area but Jake
Turner saved well by tipping Thoms Urwin’s shot over the bar and Ollie Fisher
headed the resulting corner kick well clear. Jake Turner then saved well from
another attack down the right wing and Ollie Fisher was in position again to
head the ball away from the goal line. As the visitors continued to press in
search of an equaliser, Jordan Cole tried a speculative over-head kick in front
of goal after good approach play by Tim Sanders but Jake Turner held on to the
ball. Play was end to end in a really entertaining game between two well
matched teams with Daniel Skelton firing a shot over the Brigg cross bar whilst
at the other end, Jordan Thewlis pulled a shot across the face of the Newcastle
goal, leaving the home team ahead by the single first half goal.
Brigg began
the second half on the offensive but a free kick into the area in their first
attack was cleared. Newcastle responded again with the ball switched across the
pitch from the left to the other wing but Jake Turner held on to the final shot
well. Eight minutes into the half, the
game changed after the visitors won a penalty kick. George Zuerner missed his attempted tackle on Thomas Urwin
inside the penalty area on the left wing
and brought him down allowing TIM
SANDERS the opportunity to drive the spot kick into the back of the net.
Newcastle gained more confidence to push forward and took control of the game
but Brigg defended well until ultimately giving the winning goal away three
minutes from time after Ollie Fisher’s mis-directed headed clearance was picked
up on the left wing and crossed into the penalty area for DANIEL SHELTON to
knock the loose ball into the back of the net from close range. Brigg pushed
forward seeking something from the game but were unlucky to see a header from
Scott Hellewell bouncing clear from the top angle of the woodwork in virtually
the last attack of the game.
Brigg Town: Turner, Ashton, Matthews, Bowsley, Fisher,
Jacklin, Zuerner, Dickens,
Paczkowski, Thewlis, Buttle. Subs: Broughton(82) for Thewlis, Hellewell (90) for
Zuerner; Collishaw, Wright and Iggleden not
used.

This tie is to be played on Saturday, May 24, starting at 1.30pm..
MORE REPAIRS NEAR THE A18 IN BRIGG
More A18 repairs in Brigg over the weekend, but this time without much bother for drivers. We took this picture from the Old Courts Road car park on Sunday afternoon. You can just see some of the workmen (left) on the far side of Barnard Avenue. The police station car park was used to house the machinery employed on this job.

BRIGG ROADWORKS ON A18 NEAR TESCO AND LIDL CREATE DELAYS FOR DRIVERS
Re-surfacing work on the A18 at the roundabout near the Tesco and Lidl stores in Brigg caused long tailbacks of traffic and delays for drivers today (Sunday, November 24)
North Lincolnshire Council gave notice that the work was coming up, but vehicles were queuing along Barnard Avenue, past the Monument and down Bigby Road - the A1084 - as far as the car lot near the level crossing.
Having been to Tesco by car to use the bottle bank and nip in the store for a couple of items we wondered how we were going to comply with the no right turn instruction, as it was impossible to go left and use the roundabout, due to the roadworks.
However, someone connected with the work had clearly thought ahead and the no right turn instruction was not in force today. So getting out of Tesco and onto the A18 was actually quicker than usual!
PRIME BRIGG TOWN CENTRE PREMISES WON'T BE VACANT FOR LONG
Many of us will be happy to see a "Let" sign go up on this prime retail unit in the centre of Brigg which was only very recently vacated by Scentiments. There are various rumours going round about the next occupants of the shop in Wrawby Street. If you've any definite information about who's taken it, please email scoopfisher@aol.com
GOOD NEWS FOR ONE BRIGG DRIVER
If you drive a Ford round Brigg and are minus a hub-cap, we may have good news for you.
Some kind person has propped it up underneath the St Helen's Road sign, near the junction with Bigby Road. It's been there some time, awaiting collection by the owner.

BRIGG BUTTERCROSS LOOKING ITS BEST
We took this picture just before the start of the Brigg Town Business Partnership annual general meeting in the upstairs function room at The Buttercross.
Owners North Lincolnshire Council have improved the access to this facility and it's available for hire.
On the top table, centre, is chairman Byron Teague - about to deliver his report on the past year.
If you haven't seen the upstairs room in all its glory, we recommend you do so. The building is almost 200 years old but still has a part to play in 21st century Brigg life.
Downstairs, of course, is the award-winning Brigg Tourist Information Centre which most folk in the town will have visited many times.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM BRIGG DENTAL PRACTICE
FROM OASIS DENTAL CARE, 2 DUDLEY ROAD, BRIGG
Due to NHS funding constraints, we are not taking on NHS patients at present but as we realise this could have an adverse affect on the dental health of the children in the area, we have decided to open our books to all children (up to the age of 19 in full-time education).
All children will be accepted onto the NHS, we can accept their parents and families etc but not on the NHS, but we do a scheme called Oasis Basics which is a cheaper version of Private treatment and a check up is £24.95.
Once we have funding in place we will convert these Oasis Basics patients to NHS on a first come first served basis.
Our telephone number is 01652 652070, our web address is http://thedentalpeople.co.uk/practice/the-brigg-dental-practice and our email address is brigg@oasis-healthcare.com

DOUBLE CELEBRATION AS LIGHTS SWITCHED ON AND PHASE 2 OF BRIGG HERITAGE CENTRE LAUNCHED
FROM NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL
Friday 29 November is a very special occasion in Brigg when the Christmas lights will be switched on and the second phase of the Heritage Centre opens.
Panto stars from Jack and the Beanstalk will entertain the crowd from around 4.30pm and will be joined by Brigg Town Mayor, Andrew Percy MP and Mayor and Mayoress of North Lincolnshire for the lights switch-on at 5pm. Father Christmas will also be there.
The shops will open late until 8pm and there will be gift and charity stalls in the Market Place and along Wrawby Street.
Once the Christmas lights go on, the public can take a look round the newly opened Phase 2 of the Heritage Centre which is open until 8pm.
Brigg Heritage Centre is based at The Angel and extends over the whole of the first floor. The centrepiece is the Bronze Age Brigg ‘Raft’ along with displays exploring the history of Brigg and the Ancholme Valley with a unique collection of artefacts found locally.
Phase 2 of the Heritage Centre completes the historical journey through Brigg and the Ancholme Valley. It will provide a series of rooms telling the story of the role the River Ancholme has played over the centuries and bringing the history of its communities to life. It explores archaeology and history of the area from the end of the medieval period through to the modern day.
Coun Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is going to be a great event and cause for double celebration as not only is it Brigg Town Council’s lights switch on, but we are also marking the opening of Phase 2 of the Heritage Centre.
“There’ll be lots going on. There’ll be the panto cast from Jack and the Beanstalk and Father Christmas will be making an appearance. And there’ll be plenty of stalls selling a selection of goods.
“The fun starts at 4.30pm with the switch on of the lights at 5pm, so ensure you don’t miss this wonderful occasion.”
