FIVE NEW HOTELS ON THE WAY IN BRIGG BUT NOT FOR HUMAN GUESTS

An idea to establish a number of new hotels in Brigg has now gained local support.
However, they will provide accommodation for a range of insects rather than humans.
Brigg Town Council discussed Insect Hotels during its latest meeting.
Offering shelter, refuge and a warm welcome to Brigg, they could be fashioned from old wooden pallets and provide homes for various species including pollinators and even solitary bees.
Speaking during the authority's latest meeting, Coun Rob Waltham suggested five hotels and hoped it might be possible to get young people involved in the construction.
"We all want to support biodiversity," he stressed.
Although sites for the structures have yet to be earmarked, initial thoughts include the Millennium Green (Elwes Street), Holland Park (near Station Road) and the allotments.
This topic is expected to re-appear as an agenda item at a future meeting.
Brigg Blog took a look online following councillors' discussions and discovered that insect hotels come in many shapes and sizes, but the majority have pointed and sloping roofs, with a variety of holes drilled into the wood. Sheltered sites near walls and hedges (often south-facing) are popular.
Insect hotels are well-used by pollinating species which visit flowers.
