BRIGG VENUES GETTING READY FOR VE DAY CELEBRATIONS
With only a couple of months to go until the Brigg area celebrates the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe being achieved in 1945, VE Day preparations are gathering pace at local pubs.
The government has declared Friday, May 8 a public holiday so communities across the UK can mark this historic milestone.
The Jolly Miller, on Brigg Road, Wrawby, is planning a musical event on the big day.
However, ahead of that, it will be staging a 'Get VE Day Ready' event in conjunction with Relix Vintage Clothing on Saturday, March 21, from 2pm to 4pm.
This is to allow people attending the pub/restaurant's VE Day celebrations to obtain suitable 1940s-style clothing to wear on the night and put them In The Mood (remembering great band leader Glenn Miller).
Pop along on March 21 and cast an eye over the attire, which will be displayed in the pool room area.
The Woolpack, in Brigg Market Place, is already working on major celebrations for the 75th anniversary of VE Day in early May. Full details to follow on Brigg Blog nearer the time - once everything is confirmed.
North Lincolnshire Council, to its credit, established a £14,000 cash pot for community groups which are organising VE Day events. View details here...
Brigg & District Servicemen's Club, on Coney Court, will be hosting a music night on May 8 with The Mini Big Horns Band offering sounds of the 1940s. Tickets are already on sale.
The Dying Gladiator, on Bigby Street, was a favourite 'watering hole' for personnel serving at nearby RAF Elsham during the Second World War. With black humour, aircrew renamed it The Dying Navigator! Sadly, many of them were lost over 'occupied' Europe.
WW2 personnel from Elsham also met up at the Black Bull, on Wrawby Street, to try and unwind between bombing missions.
The Marrowbone & Cleaver at Kirmington provided refreshment to airmen flying from the village's bomber base (now Humberside Airport). They renamed this hostelry The Chopper.
We expect that most, if not all, licensed premises in Brigg will be marking the 75th anniversary of VE Day in some way and we will be looking to publicise them over the coming weeks, culminating in a final round-up in early May listing everything that's on offer to the public. There will also be VE-themed events involving other businesses.
