NEW ATTEMPT TO RELAUNCH BRIGG AUCTIONS FOLK STILL CALL STENNETT'S MARKET
An update on the future of Thursday auctions in Brigg that have failed to take place since early summer has been given by Coun Rob Waltham.
The Leader of North Lincolnshire Council outlined the current situation to town councillors during a meeting in the Angel Suite.
In June a notice appeared at the site, near Brigg railway station, saying there would be no auctions until further notice.
North Lincolnshire Council advertised for a new operator to take over but months have passed without anyone signing up to reintroduce the popular trading sessions.
Coun Penny Smith raised the issue during Brigg Town Council's latest meeting, saying people living locally, and even visiting Brigg from other areas, continued to ask when the auction would be re-established.
Coun Waltham said initial efforts had failed to find a suitable successor by the due deadline.
However, a fresh initiative would be taking place, inviting interested people to express an interest with a closing date for applications.
"We want it open," he stressed. "And we want it open as quickly as we can."
People in Brigg still refer to the auction as Stennett's Market or Stennett's Auction - the name of the family firm that ran them for many years on several different sites within the town.
