SOLEMN VIGIL IN BRIGG TODAY TO MARK 'GRIM' ANNIVERSARY
A solemn vigil is planned in Brigg by rail campaigners today (Tuesday, October 1).
Held on our railway station from 1pm, it will mark the 26th anniversary of Brigg losing its Monday to Friday passenger train service back on October 1, 1993.
That was a grim day for local public transport and saw the railway authorities reduce the Brigg line to Saturdays only, in terms of passenger trains.
Despite prolonged campaigning for better services, no improvements have been forthcoming since then.
On October 1 last year (the 25th anniversary) campaigners paid Brigg station a visit with black balloons on display to mark the sad milestone.
Also in evidence on platform one was the Grim Reaper's scythe, to signify the death of the Monday to Friday train service a quarter-of-a century ago (pictured here).
Currently, Northern company Saturday trains mean you can still get from Brigg to Gainsborough, Retford, Sheffield, Grimsby and Cleethorpes on Saturdays. Plus - closer to home - Kirton Lindsey and Barnetby.
Call Northern on 0800 200 60 60 (24-hour service) for details.
Campaigners today will welcome interested local people joining them on platform one at Brigg station from 1pm to show their support for continuing calls to get more trains provided on other days of the week.
