Brigg has created eight new Honorary Freemen of the town - a prestigious honour.
They include a man who is 100 years old, the serving Member of Parliament for Brigg & Goole, a former MP and a two members of the same family (brother and sister).
Until Friday night (September 13) when a special ceremony was held in the Angel Suite, the town's only Freeman was Tom Glossop, installed in 2011. The former Brigg youth leader, who still lives in the town, served as a local councillor for 32 years until his retirement.
Freeman Tom has now been joined by the following whose 2019 nominations were approved by Brigg Town Council:
Ian Cawsey: Marking his period as MP 1997-2010 and acknowledging his charity work with animals, particularly dogs and donkeys, and through music, supporting many events in Brigg town centre as a singer and guitarist.
Andrew Percy MP: Marking his service to Brigg since 2010 during which he has promoted and supported many local projects that benefit the town and its residents through education, health, economic regeneration and enhanced connectivity.
Tony Parker: For voluntary services to various organisations. He is Brigg's former Footpath Warden and involved with the Ramblers’ Association, promoting a healthy lifestyle to residents. An ex- Scout, he has trekked all over the world and is a good neighbour to many.
Jennifer Parker: For voluntary services to the Guiding Movement and the Methodist Church in Brigg. She is now a member of the Trefoil Guild and supports the community in a quiet manner.
Hubert 'Hughie' Markham: For voluntary services to the town and retention as a fire-fighter from the end of WWII until retirement in 1978. Hughie is now 100 years old. He was unable to be present at the ceremony and will be presented with his certificate at a later date.
Pam Braithwaite: For voluntary and local ministry services to St John's Church and transforming many young lives through education and fundraising, being a former head of department at Sir John Nelthorpe School.
Jean Neall: For voluntary service, particularly to the older community within Brigg and for providing meals and baking for various local groups and people, including neighbours. She helped to run a Brownie pack in the town for 23 years.
Chris Darlington: For voluntary service, through charitable work, to the community in health, education and music. He is involved with charity projects through Brigg Rotary Club and a member of the LIVES first responders.
In addition to the title, the Town Council has decided that Freemen shall be invited to attend all the council’s civic functions (with a guest), and at those functions where a formal Civic Procession occurs, they are entitled to "process" with the Town Mayor and Consort.
Councils across the UK can honour community-minded people who have demonstrated extensive and eminent service or who have made a significant contribution to the well-being of its residents.
The relevant legislation for Honorary Freemen is the Local Government Act 1972, as amended by the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009.
These pictures, featuring Town Mayor Coun Sharon Riggall who made the presentations, were taken during the induction ceremony on Friday in the Angel Suite Lounge.
All the recipients, in turn, thanked the Town Council for granting them this honour.
The Town Mayor and Coun Rob Waltham paid tribute to their commitment to making the local community a better one over the years.
We hope to bring you a picture of Hughie Markham with his Freeman's certificate in the near future, once the presentation to him has taken place.

ReplyDeleteFor all his charms, wit and pretence; surely former Brigg MP Ian Cawsey's presence must be taking the gloss off for those other deserving recipients?!
ReplyDeleteNext they'll be telling us Scunthorpe are up to equally honouring the Cawseys' long standing mucker, and fellow shameless charmer & chancer of old, Elliot Morley!!
