SNOW KIDDING! BATTLING BARNETBY PLAYED FOOTBALL IN THIS...

Congratulations to those hardy souls who play football for Barnetby United.
There's clearly no evidence of the so-called Snowflake Generation within the railway village!
Despite falling and settled snow, the villagers managed to play their home game at the Silver Street ground in division one of the EC Surfacing Scunthorpe & District Football League yesterday (Saturday, March 17) against a team from Scunthorpe.
Only two other league games - both in the Isle of Axholme - were completed yesterday, the other six all being postponed because of bad weather.

Jez Hyke was the referee at Barnetby on Saturday, assisted by club linesmen Paul Cottam and Jon Brightmore.
Barnetby secretary Lee Fielden has kindly sent Brigg Blog this illustrated match report.
We hope all the players and match officials have thawed out by this morning!

Sherpa edge it in basement battle

Following their 1-0 home defeat to Sherpa in the battle of the bottom 2, played out in wintry conditions, Barnetby United have now gone over a year without a league win.
Despite the snow and blustery conditions it was Barnetby who started the brighter and they had the lions' share of the first half chances but failed to convert any of them.
On the resumption of play they paid for their misses as James Barley pounced on a defensive slip-up to give Sherpa the lead 2 minutes into the second half.
The worsening weather led to less-than-attractive football but Barnetby could have levelled when Gowing’s effort went wide amid calls for a penalty.

In the ToolStation Northern Counties East League division one, Brigg Town FC's away game at Eccleshill United - postponed yesterday - will now be played on Monday, April 9. Brigg remain in second-from-bottom place in the standings.
  • Veteran Brigg Hockey Club goalkeeper Andrew 'Sass' Markham tells us that the fourth team fixture yesterday against Hull 3rds got under way but had to be  halted after 20 minutes with the North Bank team two goals up. The match started at 12.30 in sunny but cold conditions. However, a blizzard blew across the ground, causing it to be abandoned. "We  decided to  retire to the pub!" he added.
