BRIGG DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS WERE FIT FOR A QUEEN

By Councillor the Rev Alec Depledge

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations will live long in all our memories ... what joy-filled events throughout the nation and Commonwealth, marking the remarkable 60-year reign of Her Majesty.
Locally, our Diamond Jubilee team worked tirelessly, and successfully, to ensure that Brigg's participation was fitting for a queen - they are all to be heartily congratulated for their efforts on our behalf.
For me, several elements have emerged from these celebrations...
APPRECIATION:  We have come together to show appreciation for a remarkable Lady, who has devoted 60 years of her life to serving our own nation and the Commonwealth of nations. At a time when it would perhaps be easy to immerse ourselves in our personal adversities, we have turned to share in the successes & joys of another, and to demonstrate that she is not taken for granted.
ADMIRATION: The strength and resilience of Queen Elizabeth II was nowhere better exemplified than during the River Pageant on Sunday, when apart from a brief break for a cuppa she remained standing, smiling and waving to the armada, and bystanders on the Thames banks. Yes, through tragedies and triumphs she has stood firmly, shining as brightly as the thousands of beacons that lit up the night skies on Monday, in her honour. This is deserving of our admiration.
AFFECTION: There can be little doubt about the outpouring of genuine love and affection witnessed over these days, as cheering crowds have greeted the Queen wherever she has gone - people prepared to be counted, to stand in adverse weather conditions, to wait long hours just for a glimpse (often nothing more), to cheer & wave for all they're worth ... how heartening this must have been to Her Majesty, not forgetting the thousands of events nationwide in her honour
ALLEGIANCE: Such tireless devotion, such long-term faithfulness to service, and such exemplary integrity surely merits the loyalty of each one of us, including those, who churlishly see it as their business to belittle the Queen, personally, and to demean royalty in general. So, may we take this opportunity to review and renew our commitment to those values of loyalty, service and integrity which are so clearly modelled by our Gracious Monarch.
Long live our noble Queen!
