Congratulations to Dominic Bishop, a student at the Brigg Kumon Centre, for taking his maths GCSE five months early and achieving an A*!
Dominic, who has been studying the Kumon maths programme for the last six years, is going on to do A level mathematics at Brigg Sixth Form. Here Dominic explains how Kumon has benefitted him.
“Kumon has taught me many life lessons. With each level passed you see the reward as all your hard work pays off. Over the last six years it has been a struggle at times to complete all my work but persistence really is the key. Kumon has benefitted me academically as my maths has improved allowing me to achieve an A* grade at GCSE maths when my predicted grade was a B. As you become better at the subject your confidence increases, so I can thank Kumon for the confidence I now have in Maths.
“Kumon maths and GCSE maths share a lot of the same topic areas. This means occasionally I was already confident in a topic before we studied it at school and was able to shine in my class. The repetition used in the Kumon maths programme means once you have learnt something you don’t forget it.
“To other students currently doing Kumon my advice is to stick at it, try to do a worksheet a day and don't give up if you don't understand it at first. The further you progress through the levels, the better position you stand yourself in for getting good grades at GCSE and A Level.”
As well as completing his Kumon worksheets daily, Dominic is also a budding sportsman. He explains:
“I have been school football and cricket captain throughout my five years at Sir John Nelthorpe School. Although I have played football for Brigg Pipers Crisps for eight years, cricket is my preferred sport. I play for Caistor Town CC and Lincolnshire under 16's.
“This summer I am going on an expedition to Malawi with a group of fourteen SJN students. I have had to raise £3,445 for the trip by car washing, doing raffles and seeking sponsorship. The main part of the trip is the community project where we will spend six days working on painting and decorating a health care unit. Across from the health care unit is a school where we are going to donate books and sports equipment.”
Brigg Kumon Instructor, Craig Cook, is pleased Dominic is able to support other Kumon students with their maths and English on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Brigg Study Centre. Dominic’s role as a Kumon class assistant involves working alongside other children to help them develop their own independent study skills. Craig says,
“I am delighted Dominic has achieved an excellent grade in his GCSE as it gives him a springboard to further success. The fact he is so keen to do mathematics at A level is a testament to the power of Kumon to inspire further learning in our students.”
“Not only is Dominic an excellent student, he is also a valued Kumon classroom assistant. He really understands the programme and is able to respond to the needs of other students. We all wish him the best of luck in his future studies and the many more adventures he has to come.”
