STEEL YOURSELVES!

I’ve scoured the girders which make up the sub-structure of Brigg’s Ancholme Way bridge while walking the towpath - on quite a few occasions. The reason is to spot the lettering which will tell us who rolled the steel. In the days before nationalisation in 1967, Appleby-Frodingham, and other firms, used to put their names on such beams. And you can still find examples in the stands at some Football League grounds. Perhaps, in the case of our bridge, the maker’s name is to be found further out, over the river, in which case something passing underneath in a boat may spot the writing. It’s very much hoped that the authorities behind constructing this bridge to take the A18 bought good old British steel, rolled at Scunthorpe.
